Frank Young performing "All of Me" on a Gitane D-500 'gypsy' guitar.  Refreshing!

Enjoy!

I was in a club over the weekend where there was a duo playing gypsy jazz on Gitanes. Real nice. Kimby-D wondered aloud if Ovation ever thought about building a guitar like that (with the tailpiece, long bridge/saddle, and oblong hole). Interesting ... I wonder what it would be like.

Friend of mine named Freddy Powers had 3 of them built.

Speaking of Freddie Powers, check out this clip with some mean Ovation shredding by Freddie's guitar player (Clint Strong?). This is some amazing playing.

Freddy's a sweetheart of a guy. I do several festivals a year with him. Unfortunately, he's fighting parkinson's and can't play at all anymore. A couple of guys play for him when he performs.

Paul, I never heard one so I don't know about the sound. He had 3 built, gave one to a friend ... one was auctioned for his parkinson's foundation... I assume the other is in a safe place... I'll ask. His go to instrument was a SSB Elite for the longest time.

They sound surprisingly wonderful, consider they are priced at under a grand. Nicely constructed, also.I know a really good guitar player that has one and you'll just have to trust me, Paul. I have one, also, and he's teaching me how to play some jazz, which, considering my small hands and short fingers, will be interesting ... Willa

Check the specs on this. "Figured Brazillian Rosewood back and sides"???? Really? That would certainly make it a pretty good deal at $995!!!

My sweet friend set up his D-500 by shaving 11/16" off the bridge, and putting some custom strings on it. He also replaced the factory installed machines with lovely chrome Klusons, which bumped the looks of the guitar in a very favorable, aesthetically pleasing direction.

The guitar is now set up to perfection, super comfortable and fun to play AND best of all, it sounds really, really GOOD.

Willa
