This one's hard to let go. I'm serious! Even my wife says maybe I should keep it! But I've projects at the factory to pay for, and something has to give.

So here it is, about as nice a specimen of the Anniversary model as you are likely to find! The finish is over thirty years old and flawless. The action is spot on! And the tone? I am not exaggerating when I say it is one of the best acoustic Ovations I've heard. PERIOD! Marvelously balanced and phenomenal sustain! As nice as it is to strum, it really shines when finger-picking! This instrument is stellar in every way!

Aesthetically, it has an understated elegance that is difficult to illustrate in photographs. The carved walnut bridge and truss-rod-cover are just the understated beginning. The custom rosette designed for Ovation's 10th Anniversary sets it apart from its colleagues without getting garish. The herringbone purfling adds even more class and perfectly sets off the bound neck with its snowflake inlays. (Another rarity on Ovations.)

But probably my favorite subtle touches are the overlays for the headstock and heel cap. Most guitars that do this only use a single exotic wood, and just that looks quite nice. But the Anniversary Ovation uses Walnut OVER Maple OVER Ebony in both places. Frankly it is just plain handsome! Look at the photos and see for yourself.

And as if it was not good looking enough for you, it backs up its looks with gorgeous sound. With that excellent, hand-picked, solid sitka-spruce top supported by A-bracing and backed by a deep, brown-finished bowl, this guitar truly resonates!

Just to round out the stats: It has 24-karat gold-plated tuners. The ebony neck is ivory-bound with abalone inlays. The scale length is 25 1/4", and the nutwidth is 1 11/16". This is the acoustic-only version, and you won't complain a bit about it.

It has two small aesthetic-only imperfections: First, the label is peeling off inside. (Should be easy to fix.) And second, there are some scratches on the treble side of the rosette that are so uniform it almost looks like the previous owner did them on purpose. They are also a little odd because there are ZERO corresponding pick scratches in the adjacent finish. You have to get close to see them, but they are definitely there. (See the close-up picture.) The only other condition to note is the presence of slight bridge bubble due to its age. It's so slight, you have to feel it more than see it, and it is no big deal in a guitar this age. The bridge and the bracing are perfectly fine and secure. And while I'm at it, I should divulge that it has only minimal fret-wear. You will not have to replace the frets anytime (or any year for that matter) soon.

It comes with its original hard-shell case which is in fair condition but perfectly sound, sturdy and functional. All latches close tightly and the guitar fits like a glove inside.

Overall, this is basically a customized Custom Legend. They are getting harder to find, especially in this condition. You will be hard-pressed to find a guitar of this quality for this amount of money. I'm asking $695 + shipping.

I took a few more pics than can be posted in a single post, but you can see them all here on my NING site.

As always, feel free to ask questions. Feel even more free to make offers!

Beautiful guitar. Love the herringbone! But it's interesting that it is natural ... never seen an Anniversary in natural before. Only in the sort of orangish color, whatever that was called. Good luck with the sale!

BTW, I put some nice, fresh Adamas phosphor-bronze mediums on it yesterday. My, my, my.......this is a nice-sounding guitar!

It's too bad you have to say goodbye to http://web.mac.com/damon67/Guitars/Main_Guitar_Page.htmlthis one. I've always thought those to be one of Ovation's all time bests.

Thank for the comments everyone, but I'm afraid I do have to say goodbye to this one.

Donate to the OFC and mark it SOLD!

And congrats to the new owner!

I guess I can step forward and take credit for the purchase of this one. Patch was ever so kind to drop it off at the Ovation Factory today, but it'll be a few weeks until I can get to it. Oh, the anticipation!

Years back I sold a rather well used 1657-4 Anniv. to offset the purchase of an FD-14, and quickly there after had some major sellers remorse. I've been casually on the lookout ever since, and this one (1157) seemed too good to pass up.

So Here's a question.. Has anyone seen a 1157 or 1657 with abalone in the rosette? The one I sold did, and assumed that they all did.. Early ones? Hmmm. ...Talbot

Well, 16 months later and the guitar finally arrive at it's new home last Friday July 27th '12 , UPS was very good to it during its short journey from the New Hartford factory to southern Maine. Wow Patch.. it really is in very nice shape and simply plays excellent. Man, What a treat! Here are a few late day pics (somewhat low light as it was getting late.. sorry) ... Talbot

I've never been a fan of the looks of these guitars, but this one is forcing a re-evaluation of that opinion. Quite lovely. As Bobbo noted earlier, I've also never seen one with a natural top.......

I probably should have added that the only reason the guitar was Ovation factory for 16 months was Due to my inability to get there and pick it up. Patch was kind enough to drop it off there during one of his visits and I thought for sure I would've been able to rendezvous with the guitar between then and now. I was fearful about using UPS as a freight carrier but enough time had passed so I took the risk. It survived fine.
