Hi,

Off Topic as this has nothing to do with Ovation guitars however :-
This is a site - www.manchesterbeat.com - started by a U.K. ex-pat about the Manchester, England. group scene who, in the '60's played the clubs, pubs and youth clubs but never made the 'Big Time' - Only live entertainment then, the only 'disco' was a gramaphone player who filled in during the interval!
It's about the ups and downs of groups, their gear, instruments and transport, even eateries - curry shops, burger bars and chippies.
I hope this site may bring back memories for many OFC members who remember that, in those days, it took many years to become an 'Overnight Success'.
One of the most interesting items on the site is in the 'My Story' section by Brian Higham, a good mate of mine who played in the same group for some time. He was manager of Manchesters top music shop for some years and tells an interesting tale.
Hope i've not bored you and hope you enjoy.

James

FWIW, lots of stuff is "nothing to do with Ovation Guitars" but as long as it has to do with Music, Guitars in some way, and preferably Ovation guitars it's fine. Better than most stuff I have to toss...

For those of us who were not around in the 60's, or just barely, wanna give us a primer. The site looks cool, but for those not in the know... well... first I saw a reference to the "Northwest" and to me that means Seattle... beeeep wrong... Then it did say Manchester, and Ovation is near Manchester Connecticut... beeeeep wrong... Then there is Manchester New Hampshire.... beeeeep wrong... Oh, it's in the UK... that makes sense..

Ok... this is an edit... I just saw the topic is "Australian Web Site"... so I guess there is a Manchester Australia?

Then the only band I recognized was a reference that it was "not a fan site for Hermans Hermits". Can't say I recognize any other name, and feel as though I should.

So... a primer for the not-in-the-know folks if you would, might be nice. Seems like a lot of history and significance and yet I can pretty much put money that if it wasn't in Crockadile Dundee, tha majority of folks in the USA never heard of any of it.

Iva Davies, Men at Work (actually maybe they were in Crocodile Dundee), Mad Max, Midnight Oil, Russell Crowe, Steve Irwin, Olivia Newton John

Preach, aside from Olivia and Men at Work I don't know the music from any of those others... I HAVE heard of INXS, Jet, and a tiny little unknown band.... AC/DC!

Miles, I would have thought "curry shops, burger bars and chippies" would have been a bit of a clue you weren't in KS anymore.

Total OT reply, but I have to say it. I cried my eyes out when Steve Irwin died. Loved that guy's spirit so much. His little girl speaking at his funeral was an immense tear jerker.

Damon,
Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil was a huge hit.
I am sure if you look it up you will recognize it immediately.

Yeah, forgot INXS, but it's hard for me to connect AC/DC to Australia. Don't know why... Man I LOVED Midnight Oil in the '80s can't believe you don't remember them. And Iva Davies? Icehouse is one of my all-time favorite bands!

Mad Max: the iconic post-apocalyptic character that made turned Mel Gibson from just a simple underwear model from down under into possibly the greatest international box-office draw of all time? BTW Best Movie Ever!

Hi,
Just to clarify things The Manchester refered to in the site name is Manchester England which is about 200 miles North West of London and about 34 miles from Liverpool.
The Webmaster emigrated to Oz and later created the site from there hence the Australia commection.

Ok, now that my brain has been refreshed, I guess I have heard of people obviously who hail from Down Under, but they are viewed in how they impact out (the USA) music history rather than that of their own country. They are presented in a "came to the states to make it" context as opposed to them probably having a career before they left the homeland.

So I am still a little fuzzy on the Australia connection to the website, and still maintain that of the artists mentioned on the site, I have only heard of the one group they don't cover apparently.

There is a LOT of great music in the world. I spent enough time in other countries to know. When I was in Hong Kong and also in Germany, I spent entire days listening to Rock stations on the radio and even going to clubs and not hearing hardly any familiar songs. But I never had the opportunity to research what I was listening to. I always felt bad about that as I would never hear those tunes again.
