After my thread about receiving this 1768C with a top that cracked in transit, and the crack I repaired from a DIY article I found from a luthier online, I thought I'd show you how I solved a few problems i still had. This is what happens when a sign painter/pinstriper wants to hide a visible crack repair. In addition to the visible glue line, there were three smaller cracks to the side of the long one going all the way to the bridge. I decided to keep this guitar because of the fingerpicked tone it has with the cedar top, but wanted to hide the visible cracks. Also, the damaged nature of this guitar meant that I relegated it to the role of a beater, but decided to make it a unique one. Out came the blue green pearl lettering enamel and white pinstripe paint. I can't wait to see the abuse I take for this. Some will I'm sure see it as sacrilege. I carried the pearl color onto the darker epaulets as well to tie it in with the hiding of the cracks. Go ahead, blast away at me. At least I kept the guitar instead of having it go to a UPS damaged goods auction!

WOW! I didn't expect that here. On acousticguitarforum I got asked if the "extra material" on the top changed the tone. I pointed out it is like putting a gloss finish on top of satin on less than 10% of the area. No change in the tone. For a beater I think it's kind of cute.

Excellent job! Not sure I would refer to it as a beater especially if you like the tone. Not all has to be "perfect" in this old world and there is a lot to be said for karma and for having compassion for the universe.

I am the poster child for compassion for the Universe. In fact, any day now I am anticipating a financial tsunami to sweep across my life in the form of a great windfall. After losing 20 of what SHOULD have been the best income producing years of my life in my career to the necessity of having a major surgery every 12-18 months apart, I am expecting the Universe to set things right with that. I survived where four doctors said I should not have... there has to be a meaning to that. Of course, I am left with two time bombs inside me either of which could hit at any time and the most I'd have is 3 hours to live. It doesn't phase me though because I know the Universe has a great reward of several seasons of prosperity before I come to the conclusion. And I believed in karma long before I even knew what it was. I always despised the cruel kids in grade school and sensed that someday they would receive their due, and the few I know about received it in spades. As for this guitar being perfect, it has no issues right now that will affect its playability for as long as I will remain on this earth. It has been healed and I love the warmth of the tone from the cedar top. I'm convinced it will remain my go to guitar even after my custom OM is completed this Spring.

If you haven't yet used the blue-green pearl to paint the fretboard binding and around the headstock, I'd think about that as a wat to complete the look.

I don't think you're being serious. Something tells me you already know how challenging and precise that job is.

Now I'm ticked off! In Carrie Underwood's last song on the Grammys awhile ago, in the dress designs were being projected onto, I swear I saw my design off this guitar in one of them.

Well, if it's good enough for a beater, it's good enough for Carrie Underwood too.

Yes, quite serious.  I supposed it would be challenging, but given the stuff I've seen you do ... you're a pro and would likely seize upon the challenge and whip it good!

Not sayin' I couldn't do it at all. I just don't want to paint in around those tiny white position dots. THAT would drive me crazy! It occurred to me earlier today when I walked into the guitar room and saw this I had created the perfect axe for dwgpreacher to use at his biker church gigs!

Just the top edge of the body binding and the edges of the headstock would tie it together rather nice.

While I don't disagree with any of these suggestions, I think I've come to a stopping point that suits me. Now, I just have to get booked into a biker bar! Besides, I'm still waiting for the paint smell to subside as it is. I still can't believe I didn't get a thrashing here for this. When I posted this on acousticguitarforum, someone posted pics of 2 guitars with artwork on the tops that gave me an idea for a whole other industry to pursue besides just pinstriping. All I gotta do is dust off the airbrush and buy a few cheap guitars off eBay to get started. I'm also thinking about having the luthier currently building me an OM send it to me unfinished... if I could just come up with a subject matter idea for the top and find someone who could clear coat it for me after I airbrush it. Gonna work on that.
