Location: Germany, where delicious wine is growing (Rheinh) | Got the guitar yesterday in the afternoon. Iwas really surprised about the condition. A little bit dusty but nearly unplayed. No marks or dents, frets without visible wear, also the case looks new and with all case candy. Only the string were extremely old.
Now I have cleaned her and strung up with new Elixir's........an amazing guitar !! ......and one of the best in playability I've ever played!!
Pics will follow when I get the chance to take some...

The 1680 is louder and a bit brighter, the UTE more mellow but even "fine". My girlfriend likes more the sound of the UTE, I LOVE them both.
Except of loudness, the difference is not very significant and if you imagine the UTE is $1500 cheaper (if I remember correct) it IS a very good guitar, I think the best you can get for that money.

Location: Utah | Is there a structural difference between the 1680 and Ute? They seem to be the same guitar except for slight cosmetics.
Someday I'd love to get a 1680 or something very similar from the custom shop. I still kick myself for not buying a 1680 from Al. He had a great price a few years ago, but I was as usual short of cash.

The Ute has the undirectional top with quintad bracing, 5-piece mahogany neck.

Thanks, I did not realize the Ute is unidirectional fiber. Now I don't have to worry that I will look like I am copying my daughter if I buy a 1680! My dream though would be a custom order very similar to the 1680 but in reverse red burst.
When Sara's Ute comes home from the Spa I will have to do a close comparison with my 2080 with new strings on both.
It is interesting that you describe your 1680 as brighter than the Ute, yet on another thread ( http://www.ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=34... ) anchbartdude reported the uni he test played in a store was brighter than the woven. My 2080 seems pretty mellow, not dark, but not crisp, compared to Sara's Ute.
Your comparison of the tops is probably the most direct apples-apples given the configuration is so similar between the 1680 and Ute. |

Location: Germany, where delicious wine is growing (Rheinh) | Well, that's to my ears. The Ute is crisp, for sure, but the 1680 has a bigger tonal range and more volume. That must be the sound ring.
I have an Adamas W681TA acoustic only, also a cross wave top without the sound ring. That IS the best sounding guitar I have ever played and owned, incl. my OFC-1 guitar.
There may be some differnces soundwise between the same series of guitars. For example: The 1681 I sold was sounding good, a nice mellow tone with a good balance. Karl's (Charlie Ramon) 1682 is sounding incredible, much way better than my 1681.
My 1881 was preowned by an endorser, playing and sounding also incredible for a SSB guitar. I have played one that sounds really dull to mine.... |
