Location: Sacramento, CA | As some of you know, I just rebuilt at 1973 Balladeer and am not addicted to the thing.
I love the clear tone and the extreme loudness of this thing.
If I get a newer one, how will it compare to this 73 model?
First off, the ones with the sound holes near the neck. Are they loud? What about the tone?
Also the mid size bowls? What do they sound like?
Do the shallow bowls sound like guitars at all?
I guess in a nutshell, how do the different types compare to what I have? because I LOVE this 73!!! |

Location: Utah | For comparison I have an LX elite mid depth bowl (multi hole style) from 2005, a 1976 deep bowl Patriot (single hole), and I used to have a deep contour LX 2007 Collector's edition (multi hole).
The 1976 is definitely louder than the others. The 2007 BCS was not quite as loud. The older guitars with the hand laid bowls seem to be loudest. The mid bowl LX is definitely not as loud, but I would say it is comparable to regular wood box guitars.
In terms of tone the deep bowls are fuller with more bass. The mid bowls are I would say similar to regular wood box guitars. There are of course a lot of variations across designs and manufacturers, so the point is that the mid bowl is not deficient in comparison to typical wood box guitars. The LX I think has a wider frequency response than the older guitar, which is not better but perhaps more modern sounding.
I think the older Ovations have a woodier tone than the LX. Idk if it is the bowls or the the bracing or the aging.
My approach has been to have a variety rather than a comprehensive collection or multiple of the same. So I have the older deep hand laid bowl, the newer Adamas with deep contour and carbon fiber, and the mid bowl LX elite. Honestly any one of these would be a keeper if I could only have one.
If you buy with some care you can sell without loss if you don't like a particular guitar. |

Location: Sacramento, CA | I'm might be thinking about a shallow bowl for the stage playing, though I'm seldom on stage. But still... |
