| First of all, a big hello from a first time Ovation owner from England.
I played a friends Celebrity at a wedding last year and was instantly impressed. I thought if the "overseas" model was this good then I had to get me a true "made in USA".
Anyway, decent proper (made in USA) guitars do not come up for sale often in the UK and but eventually a CE868 in cherry burst popped up on my saved search alert on ebay and I just had to have it!
It arrived yesterday. It is in almost perfect condition with just a hint of pick marks from playing. It has the OP50 preamp and the pearl binding looks amazing.
In short, I absolutely love it!!!
Anyway, my questions...
I foolishly jumped into this purchase with both feet and while I love the guitar and intend to keep it for many years, the Scrooge in me would like to know if I got it for a fair price!
I paid £460 for it with the hard case. That's about $700 at today's rate. I have no idea how much they would have sold for originally, nor how old it is! Can you date them by serial number?
I expect that they are available much more readily and hence sell for less in the US so I will be happy if I am within $150-200 of what you reckon it should be worth as it would have cost that much to ship one over to the UK!!!
Many thanks for your help,
Ben. |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | Those are nice guitars and pretty scarce.
(All USA Ovations are getting scarce cuz people are hanging-on to them)
First... in 2000 the MSRP on a CE868 was $1999.
HERE is an archived Price Guide.
In my internet search for them I read the number $750 often...
But on all of those sites the CE868 was no longer available.
(and these were Used guitar websites)
Anything that has an OP50 in it is not a budget model.
That stuff that looks like abalone, it is Abalone.
So long as it plays well and looks nice you got a good deal.

| That's great news, thanks.
It does sound crisp and full when plugged in. I don't have a bespoke acoustic amp so am running it through a Tascam guitar recorder into my home theatre system to get as clean a signal as possible.
It will sound even better now I know that I didn't pay over the odds for it!!!
Any tips on a middle range amp would be appreciated also. I've seen a Marshall AS50D that looks good for the money. |

| I finally got round to cleaning and re-stringing it today and took a few photos. I am so impressed with the way it looks, I just had to share them.
I have looked on the ovation website and it says that the serial number 575520 makes it a 2003.
Anyway, here are a few snaps...
