The President signed the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 providing most taxpayers a rebate check over the coming months. For those of you to whom it applies, do you have any plans to use it on a guitar or other equipment?

See other thread. Uncle Sam taketh on the one hand and giveth back a small part on the other. I much preferred the tax reduction stimulous of the 80s.

Question might be interesting also if you ask about buying a guitar made in the USA or will you buy and Overseas product. This check you mentioned is supposed to help the US economy, many say it is just more cash to send to China or elswhere?
I have given up trying to understand how any of it keeps going anymore anyway but I know buying USA made items has to be better use for this measure than buying something made in another country. I guess this is borderline Politics so please do not expamnd on my simple comments I do not mean to start a discussion about the USA vs Other countries, Just this simple question about what type of guitar you will buy. .....or not??

Since my wife considers herself to be one of the two beneficiaries of this forthcoming check, I seriously doubt I'll get a guitar with it.

I just made a comment to my wife about this thread, and she wants to know what the wives are getting, so it's not looking good here on the home front. Since I just bought the 1617 a couple weeks ago, i'm pretty sure I won't be buying another with this check, but i'll give it a shot, anyway. As for buying American, I do as much as I possibly can.

If/when I get a check I may be investing it in some tree removal in the front yard. Some big old Maples.

Hopefully I can score some nice slabs of figured wood along the way!

My "new" guitar is already in the works, which has already committed to my allotment for the year. I'll be putting money into that one all year, and should have it just in time for Christmas.

As to the rebate check...ours will most likely go into savings barring some unforseen auto trouble or the like. I may squeeze some guitar money out of it, since I've parted with some of my regular "fund" for our vacation plans this year.

FYI, be careful about these rebates. All it is in reality is an ADVANCE ON NEXT YEAR'S RETURN as I understand it. Meaning, if you get an extra $1500 back this year, expect to get that much less next year. Worse actually, because you'll have to claim this rebate as INCOME on your '08 tax forms.

Just food for thought...I think in theory it's a good idea to get people spending now and keep the economy moving, but I think a lot of people will be pretty pissed off in a year or so.

Andrew, turns out that was a misunderstanding, see here for clarification. You won't be getting any less back next year as a result of these checks.

I usually have to counter a guitar purchase with a new Coach bag for her. So basically, I have to save double.

that is usually how it works, or the 2 for her 1 for you split, that also is popular.

Damon - a Coach bag is usually the price that I have to pay as well.

The wife has decided to get new couches for the living room. We need 'em badly, too.

Ooohhhh....in THAT case..... :D

Actually, we may end up putting that into my car, which just topped the 100k mileage mark and needs a little work, or into some other similar family project.

Of course, I could always sneak in one more guitar... :p

I'm still licking my wounds from the tax checks I wrote in December and January. And I've got another one coming up in April.

I never have understood how this is supposed to work...we borrow money and send it to ourselves and somehow we come up ahead in the end?
