Joined: December 2013 Posts: 15 | I guess since I'm a Forum N00B I need to post here first. I recently rescued a Viper... it will play again indeed.. but I could really use some help recovering the proper tuners for it... 2 of the 6 were replace by some junk tuners. The proper tuners for it are the Schaller's Black Housing, Chrome peg, Chrome Logo, Chrome Key, 2 screw holes. I need 2 of the Bass Side tuners, and the grommets for the top of the peghead too. I'll post some pics of this when it's finished... the headstock logo is text only... no "bowl guitar" pic like a normal Ovation... hmm. Everything else matches up with it being a Viper... I'd like to revive it from the dust bin it was going to end up in... Restoration is almost complete...

The Schaller Black plastic tuners, M6Ns, with the two set screw tabs were used on the Vipers but not much else later. Edited by MWoody 2013-12-30 12:54 AM

In any case, this overall version of the tuner with plastic bits unlike the standard M6 are just not standing the test of time. If you can swing it, I would get a complete set of the newer version all metal M6 tuners. Upon your response here you'll get access to the rest of the forums and someone may have a New Old Stock (NOS) set of the original black and chrome ones around, but that's about it. At one point several years ago I had 6 Vipers with those original tuners and was able to cobble together only two complete sets of the originals onto two guitars and just replaced all the tuners on the other 4 guitars with new ones.

I hope you don't mind I edited your link for you so the pic show up in the post. And yes... several of us have a coffee can or jar or box of those black'n chrome tuners in unusable condition. I guess that's why they went to all chrome later on. First the little inserts (the circle with the roundback in it) would come off. It's actually only a chrome sticker, then the plastic would break usually around the set screws. Also, while trying to find replacements, you may find those inserts came in two flavors. One is the Ovation version, and the other is an S shape for Schaller. Go figure and Good luck
