I own an 1984 Ovation Model 1112 Custom Balladeer. On a church trip, the strap came off and it hit the floor. I now have a hairline crack across the face running along one of the braces, below the sound hole about 8 inches long.
I contacted John Budny who estimated 500-600 for the top replacement plus shipping, etc.
What are your experiences with having Ovation repair your guitar? Pros and cons on repair vs replace?
Many thanks! |

The price is an absolute bargain compared to what a new guitar would cost out fo New Hartford. And trust me, the workmanship will be excellent!
Repairing the crack depends upon the severity. Is it just in the finish or through the wood for example? Finish cracks can be sealed and wood cracks can be cleated, although the crack will still show. If the brace is damaged, that can add up too.
Admittedly, it can be hard for John to tell exactly what's wrong without actually holding the guitar in his hands, but he is usually pretty good at describing what he thinks should be done. I've taken his advice many times without regrets. |

Thanks!

What is the average turn around time for a repair?
Has anyone had a bad experience with a top replacement?
Anyone know what Ovation would charge to add a preamp to the guitar? Originally, it was acoustic only. I would think since they are replacing the bowl and top on a top repair that getting a new bowl with a preamp wouldn't be difficult, just an added expense.
Many Thanks!

You are correct though, that if you want to add a pre-amp, these would be the ideal circumstances to do so. If the quote sounds cost prohibitive, look through the For Sale section here for a used pre-amp. Several members, including myself, put them on the block routinely, and an "Item Wanted" ad can generate decent results as well. (One of the mods has to punch your ticket to the rest of the site first to post a Want-Ad though.)
Good luck! |
