I understand Ovation made a tribute model, but are the standars like John's still available, or has their price gone through the roof?

Location: NJ		no there was not an official tribute model. ovation could not strike a deal with yoko. there were guitars produced for the japanese market that were part of the tribute guitars they did not see the light of day in the states until I purchased around 6 of them that were not sold to japan.
they were stellar guitars

But what about the "original" models, like John's? Guess I'll have to ask a coule of my Beatles-mad friends in Japan, to help me search for one of those that got away from you.

Wasn't the original...the one that John played...an "A" braced 1651?  A little bit of a CL and a little bit of a Legend. I had read that the nutmeg tops were leftovers from the "Patriot" run. 

I have one and I have yet to find a CL that surpasses its' acoustic response. I have an 81 CL and I am leaning towards keeping the 1651. Maybe it is the exception...but it is a super fantastic sounding guitar. 

It would be nice to come across an RI. They rarely show up on the secondary market.

Location: Tennessee		Original 1651-7s pop up on eBay every so often. Just be patient; they are generally worth the wait. I have one of the tribute guitars Al referenced. It could be the best Ovation round hole ever. At least, I feel that way.

PS originally called the Legend Limited. Supposed to be a step up from a Legend with a better top and fancier fretboard inlays (more diamonds and dots). They are a-braced and sport the stacked knob preamp with stereo output.

I don't think the tops were leftover   They just used the same -7 Nutmeg stain they used on the Patriot but hadn't used otherwise.  It is a somrwhat rare color.

That makes sense.

Bob Frith had posted at one point

"Incidentally, as has been mentioned various times on this board, the 1651 was the end of the original run of the "Patriot" guitar from 1976, which commemorated the 200th anniversary of the United States. According to Ovation advertising, the mold was to be destroyed for the stencil after the first 1,776 Patriots, thus, as a result, the 1651 was born as the exact same guitar without the stencil."

And so I just tied it to the Patriot.

But since it was produced in 81 and 82...that is a long time to wait to use leftovers. 

All I know, it is a killer guitar, acoustically. 

Not much separates the two

Location: Indiana		-7 was still listed as an option as late as the 82 catalog. I had a Pacemaker top refinished in 81 and a custom built Legend made in 82.
