I have an opportunity to pick up one of these. So far only spoke with the owner on the phone. He's told me he bought it USED in 1974, and the SN is M-551. I can't find M series listed in any of the SN sites. Can anyone shed any light on what year this might be?

Thanks, Jeff

I own a 1121 that has an "M" series number.
But we were guessing about the year of manufacture.

Figure that the 6-digit serial numbers started in the middle of 1972...
There is probably some overlap.
I always figure that mine was around 1971 because of it's hand-laid bowl and 5-piece neck.
I am not sure if mine was made at Moosup or New Hartford.

But yes... There really are legitimate Ovations with "M" serial numbers.
(someone didn't just make that up.)

Thanks for the fast reply. I'm trying to get as much info as possible, because the owner is a few hours a way and willing meet me halfway. I hate for us to both make the trip, only to realize this was something I didn't want. We are both considering a trade for my 2005-ES Collectors. I only play at home and don't need the OP-Pro electronics..... and I really love the old 70's non cutaways. I had a 1612 and foolishly sold it last year, regretting it ever since.

Just curious, would you consider this a good trade?

Thanks, Jeff

.....also, I asked him if it had the foil Ovation badge, and he said no, paper. That make more sense now.

If you're happy with it, it's a good trade. I personally think the 2005c is worth a couple of 1117s.

Thanks for replying Damon. Are you referring to price, or sound/quality..... acoustically? Bear in mind I only play at home and never plug in.

Jeff,

I've updated you to full member so you can ask this in the main section, but bottom line is you could sell your 2005c on eBay and probably get enough to buy 2 1117 Legends. I've heard nothing but good things about the 05c, but I haven't had one. I have had several Legends including an 1117. It's an awesome guitar. I wouldn't say either is better, it's personal preference. I'm talking market value.
