| Hi
This is my first post so bear with me!
I have an Ovation Legend model number 1617. I have always used it with steel strings but I would like to change these to Nylon. So my questions are...
Is this desirable?
If so can anyone recommend the best strings to use
Many thanks |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | The 1617 is designed for steel strings.
You could put Nylon strings on there, but it would be difficult.
The Nylon strings would be too thick for the nut on the higher strings...
The Nylon strings would not like the tuners, and might break (but I am not sure on that point).
Also the Saddle on a steel string guitar is different that a Nylon string guitar...
Most steel string Saddles have an offset for the "B" string for intonation.
Nylon saddles have an offset for the B and G string.
Have you tried Silk-n-Steel strings?
They are have lower tension and a much lighter feel than steel strings.
I recommend Martin M1400 strings, but many companies sell Silk-n-Steel.
But to answer your question... "Is this Desirable?" No.
Can it be done? Yes, but...
Finally, "Best Strings to Use?" I don't know anything about Nylon Strings...
So I recommend Martin Marquis M1400 Silk-n-Steel.
Good Luck in your Quest.

Location: Tennessee | Hi and welcome. Generally speaking, it is not a good thing to put nylon strings on a Legend. I'm sure people have done it before, but the construction of the guitar is not really set up for nylon strings. Bracing, tuning pegs, bridge and saddle, and top are optimized for steel strings. It won't sound too good even if you can get it strung nylon. I have no idea what kind or brand of strings might work. Other here may.
There's a limited number of people who can post in this welcome center so be patient. Some other folks will come around with some smarter answers.
