Hi! I am the proud, new mama to a beautiful, 1979 Ovation Magnum ii bass guitar. I've wanted one of these babies for years, but I just never had over a grand to spare for a bass guitar. The universe was in my corner a few weeks ago, and I won this killer babe on eBay for only $415! It needs just a little bit of work (electronics need the be cleaned, no big deal) and there is only minor wear and tear...overall, she is in rather great condition. The neck is in fantastic shape, an everything else is awesome. I still think I'm dreaming when I look at it...she's all mine!

So I have two questions for you O Magnum bassheads...I've been reading some blogs in which users have talked about what strings are the best for this particular bass, as it seems people have had issues finding strings to fit properly. I would like to know everyone's opinion on what they like as far as strings. Any recommendations?

Also, my Ovation Magnum ii came with its original case, which is in pretty good shape with the exception of the latches being a little rusty...and the biggest problem...it smells TERRIBLE when I open it. It's just an old, musty smell, like it's been sitting in a death tomb for 30 years. I really can't stomach it. Does anyone know where I could get another case for my girl? I've emailed Ovation, and they didn't have any, so he recommended I start here, on this forum. I would really love to have an original case for it, and I wish there was a way to clean her original case, but this is one of those smells that will never go away no matter what you try.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm super stoked to be a part of this community!

Hello, welcome, and congratulations! The Magnums are badass long scale basses, so ask for extra long strings. I know, not much help, but really I'm not a bass player. My bass strings have never been changed :D

FYI, here's your manual... http://www.ovationtribute.com/Catalogues/Magnum%20Bass%20Owner%20Ma...

I've updated your status to full member. Feel free to ask the general population in the main section. There are only a few people with access to respond to messages here in the welcome center. Enjoy that bass! Let's see some pics! Here's mine...
