He influenced lots of the folks we all consider "The Greats"

I was always envious of that Flying V he had

Yes, Beal, you are so right on that one. I was also envious of The Flying V. We always had a Gibson and/or Epiphone Flying V, (and all of its clones), in stock, at the music store in I worked in before. I discovered the hard way that these guitars are not easy to play sitting down! Ooops!

The first guitar I bought was a Preacher and traded it up a month later for my UKII. The second guitar I bought was a Gibson Flying V. Worked all summer to pay for it. I eventually added a whammy bar to it too. Still have both.

I'd like to pick up an acoustic Takamine V one of these days

The Tak flying A is not special. I have one, have had several. When the sound is secondary to how you look, get one.....

I am sorry, I did not know who he was, but found a great article on him:

http://www.syracuse.com/celebrity-news/index.ssf/2016/04/lonnie_mac...

He sounds like a heck of a guy, and that he was Very Comfortable with a guitar in his hands!
I am really glad that you got to see him before he left Beal, and I am very sorry for your loss, and the loss to the Music Industry and future guitarists that could have been influence by him.

I covered "Oreo Cookie Blues" for years. A crowd pleaser. Great guitarist.

Yeah, Lonnie was great, I'll miss him. We last talked back in March. Saw him last back in July when I bought his 1993 prototype V (the reissue). As usual we spent all the time talking about anything but music and guitars. Had a lengthy conversation about how to skin a badger and how he skinned a rattle snake on a picnic table when he was in Austin doing the SRV sessions. He said he hadn't changed his cds on the player in a month. then an hour later my cd came up. Said he liked it and that "Here's To You" was his favorite. When it came up he knew the words. So we opened beers and toasted, here's to you! Like so many of his piers, he was the real deal.

I enjoyed Lonnies's music for years. I thought it was cool when SRV covered Wham!. I had some of Lonnie's CDs from the 80s from Alligator records. Lost track of him after that. I was sad to hear of his passing. He was a killer guitarist, singer and songwriter. And his iconic V with the whammy bar was one of the coolest and most recognizable guitars around.

Then, "Here's to You" Lonnie Mack! (I will drink a wine cooler instead of a beer though, if that is okay?)
I am impressed that he got a Badger, let alone skin it, they can be nasty critters... a rattlesnake too? I am impressed!

Rattle snake was from the guy cutting the lawn, cut the head clean off, the rest was perfect. The badger he hit with a camper in Californicate. He skinned it to show the kids how to do it. Have you seen the clip Ted Kornbloom posted on Facebook? (Magnate amps that Lonnie played) It's on my page too. Lonnie, Roy Buchanan, Albert Collins. All Monsters, all gone.

A couple of years ago at his house in the morning we were sitting round the table having coffee and talking about all the drugs we were tasking. He had one for gout, I had one for heartburn but he had another, each had something for blood pressure, and then the cholesterol etc. And then things got serious, we got out the machine! Both our blood pressures were in the normal range. When you get older it is hard to keep up this life style, you have to change drugs to keep going. Then on to the heavy stuff, corn flakes and 2% milk!

They don't make them like that anymore.

I must admit, my only knowledge of him was a reference in the opening line of "Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)" by Reunion. But, I've been doing some research and listening/watching his stuff on YouTube. It seems to me he's the embodied definition of "nice guys finish last." The laundry list of accomplished guitarists that attribute their success to his influence is boggling yet he never seemed to have garnered that fan following or just the accolades he probably deserved. He's certainly not the only one in this position, it's just a sad commentary on the music industry as a whole, and to personally have know someone like this.... I can only imagine what a loss it must be.

A huge loss! I absolutely love "The Wham of That Memphis Man"! He and Link Wray were the reasons why I picked up a guitar and sometimes put it back down in frustration!

Comparing War Wounds and Broken Hearts, I Love it!! He sounds like the type of guy that you could sit around and talk about Life with for days and days, because he has lived it! I would have liked to have met him. It seems like when you are young, you don't have time to listen to stories, and when you are older, you run out of time to tell them. I am really glad that you got the time to spend with these guys, and share the stories. And Thank you for sharing them with us, now we get to know a little of the man, beyond just his name!
