I've been looking at adding an S771 Balladeer Special to my collection. I like the no frills simple look about it. I have seen a couple of different incarnations and was wondering if anyone had any insight as to whether there's anything different other than cosmetics/year of production?
I've found one (2001) has gold hardware, a darker wood rosette inlay and a red metallic looking label. The other(1999) has chrome hardware, a layered plastic ring type inlay and the standard white New Hartford label. Those both had/have the same model number and OP24s. The Ovation archive only shows the second one I listed with OP30. |

Some S771 are Cedar, some are Spruce.
Some of later ones have a Truss Rod Cover.
The ones made for Guitar Center have an Abalone-ish rosette.
Others have an inlaid black ring, some of the Cedar have an inlaid wood ring.
The older ones have "A" Bracing, the GCS771 have "X" bracing.
The GCS771LX has "LX" Bracing.
None of this information helps.
I have owned the Red Label special with the OP-24+ preamp, it was Nice.
I once owned another one with a Spruce top.
I currently own a GCS771-C with a Cedar top, and it is Really Nice.
The one that I have has the OP-30 and a TRC.
I like the sound of the Cedar top.
But yes, there are many incarnations of this guitar.
I have never played a bad one.
