Hello there!

looking for opinions on a 1983 1651 Legend "John Lennon" that I might purchase. I have not played it and would be purchasing sight unseen.

Thanks,

Steve

Great instruments. Sound is similar to a regular legend. I doubt that you would be disappointed. Mine had a pretty deep neck which I was not thrilled about but that's just personal preference. If the price is good, I would jump on it.

Bought mine in 1981 and used it as my only gigging guitar for the next 20 years. Still have it and love it. Not sure what neck Dave is referring to, but mine has a soft V shape which is quite comfortable for my very small hands.

It has a 1 11/16" neck as well as the "Book", so you will get the same problems with it....
I'd be looking for a Folklore or 2009C with 1 7/8" neck if you have trouble with the slim ones.

The book neck is actually growing on me. I definitely prefer a wider neck but if I don't get a decent offer I will just keep her.

Excellent guitar, from what I've read on the forum very similar to the Patriot...which is a GREAT guitar. It does not surprise me that standing o's neck may have had a deeper neck profile. The final profile was carved by hand back then, which gives some nice variations that may just be perfect for any given player. Don't forget, the earlier guitars had more hand work in them, less uniformity. That's why some of the old ones could perhaps be just for you.

Don't get me wrong, nothing "wrong" with the neck profile ... just wasn't my personal preference.

I actually preferred my 1651 over my custom legend. Very close, acoustically, but at least by my ears...the 1651 was very balanced with great projection. Lots of folks swear the nutmeg stain was magical. From what I remember...the -7 was limited due to being produced from leftover patriot soundboards, etc.

Nice guitar...I have always liked the color of them...that aged nutmeggy brown....the beatles were not gear heads...but they could play anything they wanted - and more than once John and Paul played Ovations.
