Most times I'm not a stickler for playing a song the 'right way' - but in learning the proper form for this song in regards to finger picking it opens up doors to many other styles. Dust in the Wind is a great example of Travis picking, whereby the thumb is playing the bass notes. Once you get the pattern down it starts to flow. I swear it took me a month to get this down...the pattern moves along at a fairly brisk tempo! There are many versions on YouTube but I think this is the one I used. Believe me, it was a slow process for this old drummer. But now I can launch into this and invariably guitar player's heads snap around. How the HELL can the drummer do something on guitar that I can't? At any rate, if you have the time to dig in it's a very rewarding song to sing and play (although I can't hit that falsetto note Steve Walsh does going into the violin middle section). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aUr4aaSDig

I didn't think a band with a violin player could be very good. I missed a good cheap concert. They made it big a little while later.

I miss the days of guys coming out in jeans, playing their guitars and a set of drums, and actually singing with their own voices, and no electronic enhancements. No Costumes, just people, doing what they did Best. And women singing songs (Linda Ronstadt, Emmy Lou Harris) not screaming them, it seems like so many songs now days are screamed at you, and that loud noise hurts your ears. Guess I am stuck in the 50's, 60's and 70's... Edited by Nancy 2016-07-26 2:03 PM

I always loved this song and was a huge Kansas fan. I wouldn't want to go back and live it all over again but there are more than a few times I'd like to live through again. Thanks for the flashback, Nancy!
