Got Mark over for a couple of hours today.
Impressed, left the Porsche group to hang out with the Alfa/Mustang folks.

And, he is a nice guy, even for a lawyer :D

Was interesting comparing my 47RI, # 7 OFC, and his # 11 OFC.

Actually, I would like someone from Tim's visit to Paul's house (Tim's 47RI and Paul's OFC), anyone else with both, or Mark to post before I make my observation. Of the three that I have played...all outstanding but a difference.

Relax, that is a good thing.

By the way, the strings the 47RI (# 3) are about 14 months old...

My own observation of 47RI (#47) and OFC (#8) is that they actually sound more different than I would have expected. Not in a bad way.

To me 47RI sounds a little louder and brighter. OFC is a bit more dark sounding, which I actually like. But in either case the sound just jumps out of the guitar and they both sound absolutely wonderful to me.

To me the big appeal of the OFC guitar is the wide neck, it's just perfect. The big appeal of the 47RI is the light weight. Sound wise you couldn't complain about either of them. I'm anxious to compare them to an original slothead.

I think Tup's right in his assessment of the 47 and OFC. Tim's 47 did sound a bit bigger and brighter. My OFC slothead sounds a bit more mellow to me. Both sound great.

When Stonebobbo and I played our OFC slots next to playadamas' originals, all I can say is that the originals sounded like they had opened up considerably.... bigger and louder, if that makes any sense.

When I first played my OFC, I immediately noticed the difference. Took the 47RI down from the wall and reinforced my observation. The 47RI has greater projection, more resonance, and the treble to bass stands out...the voice has almost the harpsicordic difference that comes from my 1658 CL slothead 12's v. my 1659 CL 12 w/standard headstock. This, even with old, well played strings. Note that all three guitars had Adamas strings.

As to Marks, using Dave and Paul's words, my OFC (rated 93) is slightly more dark and mellow than his. Only other example to describe the 47RI and the OFC are two early 1687's - one a 93 and one a 101.

The 47RI and OFC guitars are made of same material, depth of bowl, etc. In addition to weight, there can always be a slight difference between acoustic and a/e.

Don't get me wrong, they are both superb instruments...just, at this time, different.

For me, no problem. Before the OFC guitar arrived, I was wondering if the 47RI was going to be "surplus". Nope.

And, in the past, I couldn't see how an Adamas could open up as in a wood guitar. Still don't see how that happens but it appears that it could. My 1687 reissue initially was close but different than my earlier 1687's. Now, it is similar. In a blind test, it would be hard to determine whether it is the 1979 (93) or the reissue.

Thanks for the reviews. I didn't expect that there is a noticeable difference in sound between 47RI and OFC. But as it is the case, it seems a real increase of added value to have both. Congrats Dave and Tony!

They do open up but you got to be playing them. I've seen played ones and they have improved, ones that live in the case are pretty much like new.

Thanks for your thoughts. Nice reviews from all of you.

I was able to play CrimsonLakes' 47RI at the Southern Jam and was shocked? at how lightweight it is. Since I haven't played any other A's (zero, zip, nada) I had nothing to compare it to. What makes it lighter than the others? Are all A's lighter then wood tops?

The OFC guitar is heavier than the 47RI...about the same as if you held the 47RI and the pre-amp. Sounds reasonable.

As the acoustic 47RI (and if the OFC didn't have the pre-amp), probably just the hand laid bowl.

With a strap, the weight for either one isn't noticeable as they are well balanced.

Compared to the standard Adamas I/II models (and to many other Ovations) the slothead reissues miss the Kaman bar. I also assume this to result in a reduced weight. My old Deluxe Balladeer which also has a standard truss rod, hand-laid bowl and no electronics is in the same weight class.

Got back late last night. Unfortunately a few hundred dollars poorer thanks to the Nevada Highway patrol.
I noticed a difference between Tony's 47 and his OFC and my OFC. Mine actually seemed a little brighter than Tony's OFC. When I strummed his 47 and OFC while hanging on the wall, I couldn't tell much difference, the OFC maybe a little less bright.
Tony has so many nice guitars, it was a bit overwhelming. Glad I had time for a visit. Sorry I couldn't see the rest of the SoCal guys.
