Location: Detroit area | Uh, okay, so I picked up the 05 Custom the other day, played a D chord, and lo-and-behold, I have a plinking sound on the E string @ the 3rd fret. Okay, old strings, so I changed them (using Adamas 1717E). No better. The 1818E gauge does not seem to cause the same sound, so I'm wondering if this has something to do with the action being very low??? Any thoughts?? |

twist the rod a half turn or put in a shim last resort put a straightedge on the frets and see if one of them is high. |

Location: Scotland | The 1818 are light guage and the 1717 are extra light. You can't always swap between string gauges and expect your guitar not to react. Generally there will not be enough tension in the extra-lights to pull the neck into relief if the neck-rod is set for lights. So, it's not that the action is low, but that the neck-relief is set for a heavier string gauge. Either go back to 1818's or back off the neck-rod a little. |

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | '05 Custom? Don't you mean '05 Collectors? My '05 Collectors needed a fret job before it left the factory. My problem is further up the neck though. Still haven't had it fixed yet as I can't find a luthier that I trust. (a distrust further enhanced by Amazingly Detached's thread)
Maybe the factory had some trouble with the 05's necks? What serial number is yours? Mine's 491. |
