Just got my GC 12 string 1977 model. (Thanks CWK11)It's a great design for a 12 string guitar.
I've heard alot about how inferior the old 2 knobbers sound in comparison to the recently reissued ones but I think they sound pretty good.
I guess it's hard comparing a 12 with a 6 but the main difference seems to be that old system sounds very very bright. I might try fitting the new system from my "Lennon" Legend to see how it compares. Is that an easy job?
If someone would like to post some pics for me, I would appreciate it.
I can never get it it work!

I'm not to keen on buying acoustic guitars sight unseen but when I found out CWK11 was the seller I was fine with it.
You don't find many 30 year old guitars that look practically unplayed.

Now I've got the GC 6 string reissue coming from Tuppey next week ! I thing I need to learn "Witchita Lineman".

There is NO OTHER 12 string (of any brand) on the planet that can compare with the Ovation Glen Campbell signature model 12!!!

It has the right combination of woods, the beautifully designed slotted headstock, the stunning fretboard inlays, the unique trademark oak leaf rosette, the ruggedness and ease of playabilty......and the deep bowl harpsichord sound that just rings......

It's the BEST 12 string ever....PERIOD!

Congrats Richard,you've got a beauty.

Beautiful!! IMHO, that's just what a GC 12 is supposed look like. Personally, I wish the reissues had been done in natural rather than sunburst. Congratulations, Richardd.

As a former owner of one, I will beg to differ on that. The Adamas Melissa Etheridge 12-string is superior....that's why I sold my GC12 and kept the ME12!!!

However, the sound of the GC12 is UNIQUE, and some people may prefer it. I don't.

Before this launches into who knows beter what they are talking about, please allow me to play referee ...

My new credo: I'm not telling YOU what to think, I'm only telling you what I think.

Making some assumptions here but Roger, you probably kept the ME12 because it has better action, louder, crisper sound, better electronics, cutaway for accessing the upper frets, etc. Ot maybe it's better to you bercause it cost more. That's completely understandable.

But TR and Richard probably like the GC12 because of the beautiful wood, the 12 fret neck, the slotted headstock, etc. Those are all wonderful reasons as well. Plus the TRC.

I've owned five 1118 or 1618 guitars and have sold them all. In NO WAY does that mean I didn't like them or didn't think they were great guitars. Hell, the 1688 Adamas I 12-string is probably considered by the majority of people on this board as the gold standard bearer of 12-string guitars. But I sold mine (at a loss!) because I liked the U681-12 better. I got more than one email or PM asking me if I was fucking nuts!

Bottom line, to someone who thinks the GC12 is the "best 12 string", the fact that you (or me or anyone else) disagrees with that conclusion means absolutely nothing to them. And vice versa, if you like the ME12, then you could probably give a crap if others might not be so keen on it. That's life.

Trust me I've been down this road a lot. People laugh at some of the guitars in my house that I call "steller". Likewise, they play their personal kick-arse guitar for me and I'm asking myself, "WTF was this guy thinking when he bought THAT?"

Just opinions. Dave

Yep, it's all just opinion.

Do I think my GC 12ér is the best 12'er ever built. No

It is however exactly what I wanted. You see I don't play acoustic 12 string very much so I wasn't going to blow the budget on a 1688 or even a new GC 12 Reissue.

I wanted a guitar that I could take out to gigs and plug in, have it play nicely and sound good.
I am suprised at how good the electronics sound in this 30 year old guitar. I thought I'd probably retrofit one of the new 2 knobbers but after plugging into my AER I'm not sure I'll bother.

The setup on arrival was excellent. One tweek of the truss rod and all was well.

I has a very balanced acoustic tone, slightly compressed but very even which translates well plugged in.

To me it's definately the best design for an acoustic 12ér and also the best looking one I've seen.

Also the guitar has an interesting history which is a nice plus.

I knew my statement would spark some different opinions (does that make me a troll? ;) )
but for ME I consider the GC12 to be the ultimate 12!

YMMV
