i've posted earlier in "what is this?" topic, but i think my questions deserve another one.
Guitar is Ovation Celebrity CP2002 (limited edition) with OP-24 pre-amp.
First i was quite sad about guitar sound and finish, but today i've spend nearly whole day to find tools and to make this guitar playable again.
My first question is about preamp.
is there some simple way to take it out of this guitar? i see that inside of bowl it's mounted on 4 screws, but i don't think i'll be able to loosen them.
Preamp doesn't work properly. I don't have any control of the sound.. And the only situation that you can play plugged in is when every button on pre-amp is turned off.
any ideas?
I'm going to replace nut tommorow and maybe i'll adjust the neck a bit more (i'm doing it very carefully because neck was glued earlier).
i'll post here updates and maybe some pictures. |

Location: South of most, North of few | If it's an OP24, you have to remove the knobs and the "overlay decal", it's only stuck on. There are 4 philips screws, one on each corner, to remove. |

1. Tuners
ovationguitars.com says that this celeb is equipped with gold + pearl tuners. But "gold" looks not so good on my guitar.
My other ovation (Legend) has tuners in much better condition (24x deluxe gold plated)
2. Unplugged sound.
Does every multi-soundhole mid & shallow bowl ovations sound so "plastic" ?? Sound is very clean and free from disortions, but it's pretty flat. It's cold as a winter on Siberia.
I've heard elite std and it sounded quite similar (unplugged) but when plugged that guitar got whole new dimension.
Is it the case here to? i have to plug it in if i wan't to get decent sound out of this? |

Celebrity models are mass produced in the Far East, preferably in South Korea ... these days, I will not be surprised if it's manufactured in China, along with its Applause models. That being the case, they may be gold with pearl tuners, but they may not be of high quality material, as a cost-cutting measure. This is just a guess, so don't quote me on it.

Shallow bowl Ovations, as they are very comfortable to play with IMO, are meant to be plugged in to truly appreciate its full capability [soundwise]. My first Ovation was a shallow bowl balladeer [1861] with an OP24+ preamp, and its unplugged sound was mostly on the treble side. I can only describe it as clean, bright and airy, without any of the boomy bass associated by the deep bowl Ovations. Amplified, the guitar comes to life as the preamp does its magic.
The difference between the mid-bowl Ovations from the deep bowls are about an inch I think? The mid-bowls IMO are a bit of an in-betweener from the deep and shallow bowls. I'm not a big fan of Ovations with epaulet and multi sound holes, so my apologies for not being helpful to your inquiry. However, I had played my share of mid-bowl balladeers with the center sound hole, and I'm quite pleased by their sound, both unplugged and amplified. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I agree with Gil about the shallow bowls, although my Custom Balladeer has a bit more bass than many of the other shallow bowls I've heard. The top has probably loosened up a bit.
The 2 multihole deep bowls I have (the 1537 and 87 Collector's) will knock your socks off in the sound department. The 99 Collector's is a mid bowl and the sound is so-so. |
