We have rentals so I try to keep a spare smoke detector around in case we need one. The other night I noticed the one that was out in the shop (NIP) had a 9V battery in with it. As luck would have it the battery light came on last time I tuned my 2002 so I decided to snatch the battery out of the package. No sense letting it hang there & die of old age, I figured I'd put it in the 2002. I never noticed it until a few minutes ago but it's not some cheap Charlie fake coppertop, it's an "Ultralife lithium power cell", Made in USA. I didn't know they made such a thing. It's been hanging out in the shop for over a year. I have a voltage meter so I'm going to take it back out to the shop tomorrow & check it before I put it in there. Lithium batteries of other types seem to last a very long time for me. If this one is like that it might be a good deal. Changing batteries every few years would be nice. Anybody ever tried 9V lithium batteries in an O?

Never tried one in a guitar. Might be good in the Breadwinner Limited or Deacon... but they retail for $6 (and up) when purchased in small quantities. The one that came in my irrigation controller lasted for years.

There are two versions of Ultralife 9V Lithiums.
One with a plastic shell... it's in a sealed foil pouch. Tear open the pouch, pop it into your wireless mic, transmitter, medical equipment (or whatever), and start using it.

The other version adds an aluminum shell over the plastic-shelled version. Moisture migration into the battery decreases its life. The additional aluminum shell reduces moisture migration while the battery serves in an "extended life" capacity... smoke alarms, harsher or outdoor environments like irrigation controllers, parking meters. The addition of the aluminum shell makes this version slightly larger then the basic version, but they fit.

They are suppose to last up to 4 times longer than ordinary alkaline batteries. Your mileage will vary depending on current draw. They are great in smoke detectors. The added cost is justified by the expectation that the battery will last the useful life of the detector (10 years).

Do not short them out... they get very hot.

Stupid human tricks #235
Use a Sharpie to write the date on the battery when you put it in your guitar. No point in replacing the battery every third string change just 'cos you can't remember....

The middle driving finger is strongest.
It tends to break the string it pulls on the most.
