Look-up, "American Masters" on your local PBS schedule...

If you don't know who he is.... well... s'like asking, "Who are the Beatles"....

I caught the very tail-end of it upon coming home t'night . . . will have to try to catch it again.

My Ahmet Story:

A bunch of years ago, my ex & I went to an an all-acoustic Crosby/Nash show at CarnegieHall. After the show, we went next door to the RussianTeaRoom(in it's "original" incarnation) for a drink.

We sat at the bar, and there was a rather large, boisterous party going on in the dining room. I asked the bartender "Is that Ahmet Ertegun??". He told me it was a private party for his birthday.

About 20 minutes later, Ahmet comes up to the bar to use the phone (this was "pre-cel phone" days) and to get a drink. I offered to buy the drink. He graciously waved it off. I told him that I would consider it an extreme honor to buy him a drink to celebrate his birthday, to wish him many, many more, and to THANK him for the MANY years of musical joy he had brought to me.
He raised his glass to me in acceptance.

An hour later, we prepared to leave and asked for the check. The bartender told me that Mr. Ertegun had included us in his birthday party, and that he wanted to thank me for "making his evening".

He was QUITE "the Gentleman".

I DVRed that show & watched it.
I had no idea who he was or what he meant to the industry before this.
Quite an interesting story.

The Stones concert at the Beacon in Manhattan where he fell (and subsequently died after) was filmed for a movie.

I wonder if/when it's ever released, how they'll approach the topic . . .

The Title Post of this thread should be corrected- Ahmet's last name is spelled Ertegun... not with an "a"...
