Just curious - are the MCS-148 Mando's worth it? Or would it be better to hold out for an MM-68?

I've got one of Bill's spending the Winter with me, and the thing plays like an absolute DREAM . . . it's probably spoiled me if I were ever to go to an import . . .

I believe Master Witko's owned a couple of both, and has asserted (a couple of times) that the US model IS in fact the way t'go . . .

I've run the entire spectrum. Started with applause and it sucked, other than entitling me to say that I in fact owned a mando. Upgraded to a celeb and it sucked less, which I mistakenly interpreted as good until I reached the point where I had spent more money trying to get it playable than the damn thing cost to begin with. Yes it was pretty and made people smile when they saw it. It still sucked. I was lamenting my troubles to someone who out of the blue informed me that they owned a MM68 Book Mando and would sell it to me for a very reasonable price (well, considering that it's an absolute collectors item with only something like 25 made). So my journey that started out so badly actually ended up just fine. Except that I completely wasted lots of time and money and as usual ended up doing in the end what I should have dne in the first place. If you can afford a MM68 USA made mando you will not be disappointed. Dave

Applogies to those who are happy owners of applause and celeb mandos. I'm sure you like them and that your experiences have been much more positive than mine. Maybe I was just unlucky. Or maybe not.

Couple of weeks ago saw an O mando in Best Price Guitar (bro bobby, OK City), touted as a one of a kind custom shop. Might have been a "book mando"? Natural finish, $2500 if I remember correctly.

I have a book mando and an ex band-mate has a Celeb version. They both have an Op24+ and identical pickups, plugged-in there's not much between them. Build quality, materials, feel, playabilty and acoustic tone are light years apart. Depends how serious you are about Mandolins. Incidentally, my standard USA mando sounds better acoustically than my book version

I've bought korean and indonesian low to middle range guitars, and they can be brought up to snuff. In fact, really playable. Of course that takes either time or money, or both. In theory if you buy on the higher end you'll have less trouble getting the guitar playable. I've played some high end gretches though that were crap. You gotta try 'em. You never know, the low end item may work for you.

I would, Stephen, but I just picked up a 1759-5 for $600. Need to sell my 1866-5 before I go any further.

Paul, I did sell my standard mando, then I found another one silly cheap and bought it as a back-up.
