Joined: August 2012 Posts: 227 | Back when I was on a quest to buy a new acoustic guitar, after 30+ years with my Ovation, I was really looking to get a Cedar top with Rosewood back and sides. I just wanted something that sounded different than the basic spruce top. I ended up with a Walden G2070 which is cedar with mahogany. I really like the tones of this guitar. I don't think you could really strum hard with a flat pick with this top, but it's great for finger style and melodic picking. While I was searching, my local guitar shop said that a cedar / rosewood is hard to find in steel stringed guitars, but is popular in classical instruments. Ok, back to the topic. I have seen a new Ovation something or other AX guitar on eBay with a cedar top. I found an older thread that mentioned some mid 90s guitar with cedar. How many cedar topped models did Ovation make ? Do they sound quite different or not ? To me, cedar sounds more moody and less bright. Which is good, if you want that sound.

Dave, you know where it is! You are alway welcome to play it again, but I never ever will sell it again!!! But back to the question: There were also made some Elite's with cedar top, I gess the "1718-C4". Bryan had one. And what about the classicals. I've owned a 1713 with cedar top.... Bernie

At Guitar Town this year, a rep from Taylor gave a presentation on tone woods and body shapes. He discussed how each affected the sound of the instrument. He brought along examples in spruce, cedar, maple, koa and probably others that I am forgetting at the moment. It was a very worthwhile and enjoyable session.

BTW I'm in search of a custom balladeer 1712-4C (Cedar), made for a limited period of time in mid 90's.... just a personal flavour .......

Those cedar tops have an awesome warm and full tone. I miss those guitars a lot, but I ended up going for something closer to a standard classical guitar with the Taylor name on it. I know, Taylors all pretty much sound the same to me too, but their cedar top grand auditorium with the cutaway and narrow neck is a completely different animal... and it came with very nice tronics. This thing sounds and plays great both plugged and unplugged, but it really comes alive plugged into my acoustic amp. I truly wish Ovation would have built it, 'cause I would have liked it even that much more, but they didn't. Once again, thumbs up on cedar tops. Edited by bvince 2012-10-04 2:38 PM
