Wonder what the story is behind this guy? We need an Ovation Whisperer.

That's an absolutely beautiful guitar. Wish I could justify buying it, but you've got to be on stage performing much more than me. But it is beautiful and the price is good.

I agree with Al's observation. Looks stock but due to the location, you just don't know.....

Al, if the label says "Electracoustic Proto", and it appears to be hand written, why wouldnt that be considered a prototype?

The serial would indicate it was made the year prior to production models being offered and the pre-amp controls certainly looks like a crude version of what was offered.

I wonder why he doesn't show where it says those things. I just see a serial number and the model number.

The preamps had a couple of different looks, so that doesn't say much. I was also under the impression that a prototype wouldn't have a serial number, it would have a date instead.

Jay that's a beauty. 1993 would make it nearly end of the line for hand carved necks. CMS machine came after this and a great deal of the drudgery of shaping the profile was eliminated. Forward of this too was a conscious decision to make the headstock edges more crisp. It was decided that the edges had become too rounded. Even still you can see the quality of the hand sanding on the back of the headstock, this ebay example having thoroughly rounded edges with perfect radii and no lines visible. That was the standard at the time.

Oh yeah the rest of the guitar is nice too.

Al, No biggie...I think it is a very cool piece of history. Electracoustic may have worked in the 60's, but I think Viper fit it better.

Geo, thanks for sharing that.  I wished I had some tuition money back...

I just added some light to the picture and it seems to be a proto.
Very interesting guitar.
