I picked up an unplayable 1621-4. The body is separating from the neck and the pick up is missing, however the neck and frets are in great shape. Everything I've read so far says the production of these guitars started in 1971. The serial number should be 5 digits. Now my question, the serial number on the guitar is 5355, black ink no prefix, it is on the small rectangle paper from Ovation Instruments. That serial number makes the guitar made between 1967 and 1968. Is that conclusion correct? Is that possible for a 1621-4 to be made in those years?

Thanks and Merry Christmas,

My Artist's serial number is in the 6700s; when I got it from Sergio he said it was from 1972--mine has the single knob that's just a volume control. My 1111 (Gertrude) has a serial number in the 4200s; I'm pretty sure the original owner got her about the same time.
Hope this helps some.

The Artist (1121) and Electric Artist (1621) came out in the spring of 1971. Some got square paper labels, some got oval metal foil labels. Some had 4 digit s/n's, some 5 digit, and some 6 digit. I think basically the factory was trying to use up whatever old stock of labels they had around at the time before standardizing on the oval metal label. Your guitar is probably from the fall of 1971. Dave

This one has the single volume control in it still. Thanks for the info Dave and Karen. It appears that it is from 1971.
