So, on a thread about my newly acquired 1111-4 we were talking about the plastic shaft tuners that came with the steel string Folklore. I learned that I can switch these out to a metal shaft version but I will need to use bushings. It appears that there are bushings in my headstock (see picture). Can I simply replace the tuners with the metal shaft version and use the bushings that are already in the headstock? I believe there are a set on eBay that I am about to pull the trigger on.

My other question is, if I decide to not use the Ovation version what recommendations are there for open back tuners that will fit on my 1114-4 Folklore?

Thank you in advance for all of the help,

Steve.

Are the shafts metal with the plastic shaft over them? If so it would be easy and fairly inexpensive to get your local machine shop to make a metal set of overlays to replace the plastic.

Steve, exactely! The bushings are still inside. If you want the plastic off, destroy it. I've done so several times with mine. The shaft is rough under the sleeve, but that's good. The strings have more "grip".
You can also swap for the tuners Al is selling. They will fit as well.

First... I was looking through the OFC using the "search" button.
I remembered someone removing the plastic rollers on either a Folklore or an Academy KA-17.
Anyway... I couldn't find that, so I cannot be positive.
But I seem to remember someone just cracked the plastic off of one of them.

Second... I think that the Folklore tuners that Al is selling on eBay will just fit into those bushings.
I have a 1614 that has the metal rollers... And I have photos of it disassembled.
The previous owner did this repair on the headstock, so I didn't take these photos.
But you can see that they look about the same.
And it has the same bushings, but no plastic rollers.

BTW-- If you loop the ends of your strings like they do when tying-on nylons strings, the steel strings shouldn't move on the rollers.

edit-- See? While I was typing Bburg had the answer.

So it looks like someone purchased the tuners on eBay before I could get to it. Does anyone know of a replacement that I can purchase that will fit with metal shafts?

Thanks

I'd say if it isn't broke don't fix it.New plastic "sleeves" are easy to make or have made when the old ones go. you could get a interference fit then add the string hole with a hand drill yourself to save a buck. it might even be a stock tubing size if you are lucky, then you would just cut to length.

Well unfortunately, the originals will need to be replaced. Does anyone know of a replacement that will be a direct fit?

Thanks.

Give Mothership a call or shoot John Budny an email. I was able to get NIB replacements for my Folklore (with the sleeves) through him.

Mine are still here, if you want without the plastic sleeves.

Bernie,

I would be interested in purchasing yours. Can you shoot me a couple pictures and payment information?

Thanks,
Steve
