Location: Asheville, NC | I am in the process of buying my First Ovation.
I am being offered a Brand New Ovation 6868 Elite Standard Acoustic from a private party, It was never used.
This Ovation guitar has an OP-24E acoustic-electric preamp with built in E tuner. Solid sitka spruce top. Mahogany 2 piece neck. Rosewood fingerboard. It has the inlaid Oakleaf Hole design and is in a natural color. It has No fret inlays. Price is $500.
I am not able to find this model anywhere, yet I can find a model 1868 , that looks the same, from online dealers at $750.
Is the 6868 an older model? or a newer model?
Is anyone familiar with this 6868 model? And can you give me any advice on wether to buy it or the 1868. I like the full sound of an Acoustic and would enjoy as nice a sound when plugged in.
So any "model" advice would be welcomed.
I have played Guild and Martin guitars for quite awhile and would like to get into Ovation.

Welcome! I have a '97 6868-BCB (Black Cherry Burst)(see a pic in my gallery)
6868 is a Standard Elite which is the stripped down version of an Elite....chrome tuners,plain 2 piece neck,mine has a super-shallow bowl(Ovation's website has it listed as deep bowl!?)
mine also has the OP-24E (E-tuner)
Great playing guitar! A little "thin" sounding acoustically but plugged in it's hard to beat(the super-shallow bowls were meant to be played "plugged in")
You said it has "inlaid" oakleafs? Do you know the serial #/year? My "epaulets" are not inlaid...could your model # be a S868 (Elite Special?) http://www.ovationguitars.com/?fa=detail&mid=66
as far as price(does $500 include the case?))....If you like the guitar and plan on playing mostly plugged, go for it but it doesn't have that "full" acoustic sound unplugged!

Thanks for the replies.
The $500 "does" include a case.
I have an email in to the owner for Body depth and year of guitar.

I am concluding the purchase now, but hope I did not jump the gun. I really would like to have an Ovation that would give some nice acoustic sound and also be decent when plugged. I am new to the Ovation and seek advice.
I guess I may have to purchase a second one too, if this does not fit the bill for the acoustic end. :D
Any suggestions on one for those needs for(acoustic)?
A 12 string is not out of the question either as I enjoy my Guild Orchestra body 12.
I always admired the Ovations, and have now decided to try them. I play strictly for personal pleasure and not for band or money.

Location: Minden, Nebraska | My first Ovation for live performance was a 6868 I bought ten years ago. A few weeks later I found a Legend 1867 at a garage sale for $175. It had cracks, no case, and smelled like cat piss... but all of those were curable. I bought it and it became my main squeeze for ten years, as I decided shallow bowls were better suited for my roundfront.

Location: the BIG Metropolis of TR | looking at the ebay pics the serial # on the headstock(521383) makes it a '97 (same year as mine)and it is a super shallow bowl!
Good lookin' guitar!!(nothing purdier than a natural top!!!)

Location: Midland, MI | YAY! Another natural (-4) finish goes to a good home! Everyone knows the natural finish is the best. Except for the Cadillac Green, that might be better. ;0
Congrats on the acquisition, I think you did well if you got it for $500. The only thing it lacks is a five piece neck. But, I'm sure your next one will have that feature. ;) |
