What is the purpose of the Ovation saddle design? Why do some Ovations have this kind of saddle:
and other have this kind:
I have the same Adamas as shown in that picture. I've kindof been knocking around the idea of putting in a bone saddle. It seems like the other design eliminates the possibility of bone or ivory saddles. It also seems like they would be harder to make.
What is the advantage of them? |

Location: Scotland | One is the original Ovation pickup, the thinner one is the thinline pickup (obviously) There is a third pickup called the Tru-balance. The thinline and Tru-balance seem to have been discontinued on USA guitars. The Original pickup has some bulk because of the 6 piezo crystals, aluminum shielding channel etc. The other 2 may sound a little better acoustically, but the OPP leaves them standing plugged in.
I have a factory installed bone saddle/OPP on my Custom Folklore. It was not cheap and the difference it makes is pretty subtle. It's there but whether it's worth the effort is debatable
The thinline has the pickup and saddle as an integral unit, so it's not as simple as putting a bone saddle over a conventional undersaddle pickup. |

Location: NJ | Anybody got a saddle/pickup assembly that's deeply grooved that they wanna get rid of??
I've had a bone saddle for a while, and instead of pulling apart the assembly on my guitar (& f@cking it up), I'd like to rebuild a whole new assembly & "swap out" (and thereby have a back-up) . . . |
