My college aged daughter has now taken an interest in learning guitar. I thought I would hit ebay for a series of instructional books/DVDs for her but found a seemingly infinte number to choose from. When I started years ago, I had the choice between Mel Bay and, uhh, Mel Bay. I know, that really dates me.

Any comments and suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

stay away from the traditional mel bay series.

best advice is to figure out what type of music interests her and then check out a book or dvd that fits her needs.

sorry there is not just one I can tell you about.

Depends on what type of learner she is ... if visual/auditory (and has a high speed internet connection - but what college student doesn't), a subscription to Workshop Live will get her going. Check it out here: Workshop Live

If she is better at learning by reading, then books are the way to go. One series that impressed me was Guitar Grimoire, which can be found here: Guitar Grimoire . Another good one is (our very own) Matt Smith's Chop Shop book which can be found on his web site store here: Matt Smith\'s World .

Then encourage her to get out with other folks so they can all learn from each other!

Thanks guys. I'll visit with her as to what she wants to learn, i.e. chords for strumming or lead lines. I did check out some other series at a small music store, but the songs included are probably only known by her grandfather.

I agree with Steven...the Homespun tapes are good...but nothing is a substitute for sitiing down with someone face to face...maybe not in total, but atleast to fill in the blanks and for you or whom ever to show her what she is doing, worng AND right :)

I remember somebody here recommending the K.I.S.S. Guide to Playing Guitar by Terry Burrows. I've looked through one and it does seem good, especially for a beginner. Looks like you can get it on eBay for about 5 bucks, including shipping. KISS Guitar

If y'think she might be interested in WorkshopLive, e-mail me your mailing address. I've got a card that's good for a week's worth of free unlimited online lessons. I'll send it to you t'give to her if y'think she might use it . . .

What a deal! I recommend WorkShopLive also. She should start on a week when she can devote a couple of hours a day, at least, for the lessons. Of course, a reliable computer and fast internet connection is important. She can experiment with different styles during that week: classical, acoustic, electric, rock, jazz, etc. I think it will be a good start. If she chooses a specific type to study, post again and I think many of us can recommend some good instruction books.
