In that vein, this thread is here to let us share, in a collected, list-y kind of way, new music that we find relevant, Here are the rules (posted here so that you'll all have something concrete to ignore) 1. The music has to have come out since 2000 (bonus points if the artist did, too). 2. List your top 5, OK 10. If you have more than 10 let some other people post then post some more. 3. The music has to be widely available. If I can't get it in my local record store or order it from Amazon or download it from the web what good is that to me (or anyone else)? 4. The main point (OK, one of the main points) of this thread is to help us all cut through the 90% to get to the non-crap. So, please, no touting of your friend's/descendant's band. Of course, if someone else recommends your f/db then that's a whole different thing. 5. Finally, this is a place to make recommendations, not to criticize someone else's recommendations. Thank you for your patience and forbearance. Now, ignore away... My recs The Decembrists. For those who think AOR is gone check out their latest The Hazards of Love Manchester Orchestra. Check out Mean Everything to Nothing Ray LaMontagne. My favorite of his is Till the Sun Turns Black. My [current] favorite track is Can I Stay. Sufjan Stevens. I like 'em all, but I recommend Come on Feel the Illinoise My Morning Jacket. I've thought for a while that these guys were one of the best live bands ever, but wuth Evil Urges they've emerged as a great studio band as well. Shivaree. I bought this album because of the name, but the music hooked me like crazy. The album is I Oughta Give You a Shot in the Head For Making Me Live in this Dump. Their followup Who's Got Trouble continues the goodness. Citizen Cope (aka Clarence Greenwood) Every Waking Moment Burial. What is dubstep? I dunno but I like it. Burial's Untrue album makes me think of what would happen if you left the microphones on overnight in a haunted studio. Bohren & Der Club of Gore. Along with Burial this is a prime example of music you could not have gotten in the 60's. Dolores is my favorite of theirs. I don't have the slightest idea why I like this band. I shouldn't. It's like melancholia on morphine, but I find it strangely compelling and "weirdly cool". More later...

Death Cab for Cutie - not a devoted fan, but I like them Grayson Capps, thanks to Beal Jack Johnson - one of the artists our whole family agrees on. +1 for Ray LaMontagne. "Jolene" is such a great song. I can't really relate to the life experience, but the song is so passionate I almost think I can.

Here are some more worthy additions that haven't... Amos Lee - Great soulful voice. A good pick for those who like singer/songwriters The Shins - Wincing the Night Away The Explorers Club - Freedom Wind is like the great lost Beach Boys album. They even made the artwork look like an old worn LP cover. Eef Barzelay - Lose Big. First of all, the name Eef Barzelay is just plain fun to say. Second it has a great album cover and, hey, the music is good, too. Muse - Absolution. They've had a couple of albums come out since this one that I like, but this one remains my favorite. Great music for getting out on the highway, rolling down the windows and getting a speeding ticket. There are also some recent cover albums that IMHO deserve a mention. Moody Bluegrass - Goes to show that good music transcends genres. True Love Waits and Hold Me To This - Christopher O'Riley plays solo piano versions of Radiohead and makes it more than work
