Our local city / suburb has a "what's happening in our area" Facebook page.
About 2,300 "friends" are listed.

I posted...

Can you play guitar?
Can you sing along?
Confident enough to play with other people?
Trying to keep busy in the upcoming winter months?
Just an idea... how about a once a month informal /unplugged acoustic jam session for the like minded, semi-accomplished hobbyist?

Great idea, but... Looking at those parameters, I'd be kicked out quick. You will have a defibrillator nearby for this crowd, right?

I have recently moved to smallish city in the middle of nowhere where I don't really know anyone and would be happy to see or answer such an ad ... good luck!

I've been watching Craigslist for the past few years for similar postings and found one that seemed compatible. I responded probably within a day of the posting and he already had several responses and one lined up. He was just looking for a duo. He suggested I do a similar post, but I never have. I can't even get the guys I know to jam on a regular basis.
Most of the rest of them are like Damon--too young to appreciate good music. I especially like when they list their "influences" and I don't recognize any of them or when they claim they have years of experience and you find out they are teenagers. OK, I'm old and senior citizens apparently don't post on Craigslist. I don't on Facebook.

In Syracuse there's the Guitar League, www.guitarleague.com, which has been great for acoustic players of pretty much every level. Started a few years ago by three friends whose baseball-themed concept was pretty simple. Get a bunch of players to bring their guitars in to a venue (and they've held it at several places) once a month, have a ~hour long demonstration on something of interest (finger picking, recording, maintenance, theory, performing, etc), then break into three groups for another hour or so for more specialized discussion/play - the rookies (beginners who need help with basics), the minors (those who are fairly proficient but want to increase their ability) and the majors (guys who can REALLY play). Meetings are $5 per meeting or $50 annually (I could be off on those numbers but they're close - it's really cheap for what you can get out of it). It's a great way to interact with other players, get some instruction at your level (and you can float between the three levels if you want) and hear some really great players. Occasionally they bring in name players too as I've seen Tommy Emmanuel, Stephen Bennett & John Knowles in very small venues and they were fantastic. Their thought was that they might be able to grow the "league" into different parts of the country and people could hit one wherever they were. I know there was another started in Ithaca (~100 miles west of Syr) but I don't know if that one still exists.

They've been going strong for ~ 5 years or so it can be done.

We have a jam every Saturday here at the shop. When I mention it to newcomers I just tell them it's an acoustic jam. Yeah, we get some country players, some bluegrass players, some folk, some blues, a few of us jazz people, and some acoustic rock players too. Everybody learns something and nobody minds the different styles. You might be surprised at how much fun it is.

I've got nothing against electric. It's just that sometimes there are 20 plus people who show up and that many people plugged in would simply not work.

I've been going to a free, open and open air jam in a park near where I live for just over a year. It's acoustic only and is nominally bluegrass, but it also gets into country, country rock and folk of various types.

There are players and singers at all levels, and it has improved my playing and singing enormously.

It's called Jammalong, and has been going for about four years. We had a concert last September where a few of the participants, including me, did some short sets. Great fun!

That sounds awesome!. I'd love to be involved in something like that.

Banjo invited me along to the Jammalong as well (it was originally an easy way to catch up with him to see his Ovations ) and I've come along a few times now as well. It's certainly helped my playing a lot as well (even if it's only providing a solid reason to practice, so I can keep up on the day :D )
