Does anyone know the difference between the nano web, and the poly web Elixirs? I've heard that one of them "shreds". I've gone to the Gore site and they don't seem to give much information on the different coatings.

Polyweb is the original coating. It's thicker than the newer nanoweb. The polyweb shreds noticeably as the coating wears off. It looks like fraying but does not effect the sound. I haven't noticed the shreding on the nanoweb. I prefer the nanoweb but I really can't say why, except that I don't like how the poly's look after they start to shred. The polyweb has a slicker feel and reduced squeaking. I haven't noticed much difference in the sound of either.

Could poly refer to the material (ie polysorbate 80 or something), while nano refers to a smaller or thinner coating (ie an ipod vs a nano ipod?)

Thanks Mitch, I thought the polys were the ones that shred, but wasn't sure. I've been using the nanos and have been very pleased with them.

I prefer the Polys because of their silky touch and the nearly hearable squeaking while sliding barre chords.
The Nanos, to my ears, have more of a uncoated sound and feel.

If this is something that matters: The Polys do have a golden, champagne colour while the Nanos have a bronze colour.

Funny is that not every set of Polys loses his coating. Some of my strings are hardly worn out although I played these guitars more often than others that are really screwed up.

Best regards,
Kurt

The polys are slicker to the touch but some folks don't like that feel. The nanos are slick also, just not as slick as th polys.

The color difference is not in the coating. Polys are only available as plain bronze. The nanos come in plain bronze and phosphur bronze, which has a darker more copper color.

The Nano is a tighter, finer coating (the poly is almost a mantle or sleeve) and to my ears sound brighter than Poly.

At first I wasn't sold on the sound, but I think it was just too light of a string when I started. Now that I'm using med./ lights (12-56) They sound wonderful and last forever. Plus the phos. bronze nano's look very nice with a golden color.
