=========================

I am walking in the "Walk Now for Autism" -- it's the signature event for Autism Speaks. The event takes place on June 3, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Battery Park.

If any OFC members from the NYC and surrounding areas are available during this time, I am writing this as an invitation to join the walk for a worthy cause. Together, we hope to make a difference and advance and accelerate autism research.

As a special education teacher by profession, I will celebrate the day when I no longer have to teach individuals with this neurological condition, known as autism. In the future, depending on the amount of interest from members, perhaps a team representing the OFC can take part in this annual event on an on-going basis?

Just an FYI

My purpose for posting and inviting is NOT to raise funds ... just to raise awareness.

The fact is, 1 out of 150 children is diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). There is no contending that a child being diagnosed with autism is every parents' nightmare.

Now I could be a selfish prick, knowing that the above-mentioned statistic, could mean job security for me and my profession. But I'm not that type ... I sure hope not ...

I can't help it, but there are days when I get emotional when working with these youngsters. That sometimes, I wished I was Merlin, where I could raise my magic wand and make these children's problems go away...

I think you have the same job as my brother in Oregon, Gil. It takes a special person to teach those special people.

very worthy effort, gil. you are to be commended. i have studied, somewhat, the link between autism and childhood immunization. in my opinion, based on statistics, big pharma is poisoning our kids.

As a father of a now 23 year old son who went from fully involved autism to barely in the spectrum symptoms, I am thankful for efforts of people like yourself to help. There are many things out there that help, but you have to dig for them as a parent, so all the efforts to increase awareness and funding for research are something I appreciate.

1 out of 150. That means that about 40 of us are there. I wonder, does playing an instrument help in the overcoming of the symptoms?

Not so far in my case, Beal.

This is a great cause and raising awareness is important. Thanks for the post.

It is indeed a worthy cause. My Cousin Mary's 6 year old son is Autistic... a lifelong challenge for sure.

I read an astonishing book by Donna Williams who is Autistic. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in learning about Autism from the inside-out.

this is an example of a good solicitation post.

a know cause and orgainzation.

my caveat is that often most of the funds collected in these types of events go for the running of the event and it just acts as a feel good event for the participants.

my wife is a cancer survivor and she refuses to participate in any of these types of things and I understand her reasons.

carry on!!!!

I was involved in a skating event, and we had "help" from an event organizer. It turned out the help was taking most of the funds raised. So Al is on the beat, before giving, please check on how much goes to the organizer, how much goes for administration etc.
