I read somewhere that, maybe here, that some Ovations had a foam neck, or something like that on some models, including the 1139. What is the skinny on that? One of the things I really like about my ancient Balladeer is the neck. It always felt to me like they slapped on an electric neck to an accoustic body. I don't know if that composite neck is supposed to be good, or bad, but the action is as good or better than most electrics I have played. After 20+ years, the neck is still straight as a string. Was this type of neck an experiment, or do they still make some like that?

I know the original Ultra's had em. I'm not sure about the new version. I think there were some other models with the composite necks.

The Matrixes had them also, or at least mine does, first with the aluminum fretboard and then with a wood fretboard. Nobody notices the foam neck on mine unless I tell them.

Is the 1139 neck of this variety? I don't know how to tell. It looks like a regular old neck to me, only really narrow and nice.

I hate to argue with Bill or the Ovation book, but I bought a 1976 Matrix in late 76 or early 77 and there was no Medallion name on it anywhere.

I have an Ultra from 1982 with the Urelite neck, I didn't know it wasn't wood for several years. It worked really well until it started to bow and there is no truss rod for adjustment. It's now set up as a slide guitar. The Ultra had a rosewood fretboard, not aluminum. I always understood that 1982 was the first year of production for the Ultra line.

Maybe Bill is right and the Ovation serial number list is wrong. I checked and I bought mine in July of 1977. The literature that came with it talks about Ovation approaching its 10th anniversary and the new technology of the neck and Lyrachord bowl used on the Matrix. The serial number list shows it as a 1976, however.

Maybe it was 75, just that the Medallion was first and we got a letter from some little prick dealer who had the rights to the name, so we did what we like the people we send letters to, to do. We changed the name. Then came Matrix.
NOt sure when the Ultra started but it was late 70's. In 82 Moosup guitar production started to shutdown so it was all ending around then. I think it finally ended in 84 when the Adamas moved to New Hartford.
Your ultra probably has a phoam neck. Does it have an adjhustment nut at either end? I can't remember if these had adjustment or not.

Isn't it funny how your memory fades? I can remember when we got married, only because I had it drilled into me and because it was the year before I graduated from law school. Everyone can remember when they graduated from high school or college, but a lot of us can't remember when we got married or how old our kids are. That probably has some significance, but I can't remember what I was going to say.
All I can remember is that my best memories are of stuff that never happened.
