I have been asked to post our story here, so here goes. I have a son, 15 years old that has been willed an Ovation Breadwinner. As the story goes, the guitar is believed to be an early Breadwinner, one because the serial number is E00332. Two the line jack is in the end instead of on top and it has larger pickups than other Ovations that we have seen. It has been suggested that it could even be a prototype. I don't know where my brother in law could have gotten a hold of a prototype, but stranger things have happened. Anyway, the guitar was disassembled, refinished, and then put away. For decades. No one knows why he decided to refinish the instrument as he couldn't see it to start with. He was blind. Granted it got worse as he got older, but he passed away a few years back now so we may never know his reasoning. The instrument is believed to be a tan Breadwinner from the tortoise colored pick guard it came with. We have never seen the same pick guard on any another color but tan. the piece has now been stained, and we all know what that did to the value. To be honest, we don't care about the value, we just want to restore it to an enjoyable, playing condition. I have photos if anyone is interested in seeing the piece. We think we have everything that came on the guitar, but the pick guard is now broken from improper storage. The electronics look like new and the pickps look pretty good also. The body neck, and head all look good. The OHSC looks good as well.
My brother in law was a musician who made his living playing in clubs in Tennessee and Virginia.
Anyone that might be able to shed any light on this beautiful instrument, please feel free to respond.

thanks,

HD

Original PGs are available but I since the originality has already been messed up to a degree, I would have Woody make a custom pickguard for it.

As a matter of fact, if you are not sure about fixing it up yourself, I would get Woody to overhaul it and make it better than new. He does excellent and sometimes beautiful work.

Well I obviously have these guys baffled!
But we do like take care of the broken, bent and scarred. The Tan (Buckskin) with the Tourtoise Celluloid PG was a small run of late-early Breadwinners.

If you make a good tracing of your original, including all holes and openings, I can cut one in Tourtoise or in a wood veneer. I can send it to you with cost and you can see what you want to do, no risk.

I do have a preferrence for the woody tones.

Here is a Tan BW taken from Jerome\'s website

It would be fun to see pictures. MWoody is the guy for custom pickguards and refinishing.

Mike, do you ever refurbish old plastic pickguards by applying veneer over them? I have a couple that aren't very pretty.

Steve,
About half of my PG's recycle the original. It is easy to patch a piece in if it was missing and let the Gorrilla Glue do the rest. as long as there is an outer edge to work with it's fine.

About 70% of PG's broke when the Picker stepped on the cable and yarffed the jack out. Another 20% were the result of non-Ovation Pup modifications.

That said, about 87% of all statistics are made up on the spot and half of you that are reading this post are below average...

Gee, all I did was ask a simple question, but you've got to make it personal! ;)

That's the "personal service before and after the sale" that they're always raving about.

I've seen new manufactured repro pick guards for sale on the internet. They have a large selection of materials, multi-ply or single, various colors, etc. But I don't recall seeing the tortoise color.

There are a number of places online that offer various parts if you need replacements.

For any serious work, like refretting or replacing the fingerboard, I'd send it to the factory.
