Hi! I just bought a GC 1118 Ovation off of here--BEAUTIFUL! It came with the original case--(which is beat up)--I am buying a new case for it the 9158 case. I will be traveling this summer on a plane--I want to take it as a Carry on--Do the Ovation cases fit? I would never ever want to put it in baggage---they destroy them. Anyone know??

So far, I've had pretty good luck by taking it to the boarding gate and then having THEM ask if I will check it (just like a stroller). That way I have been able to pick it up as I leave the plane on arrival. I've found it better to act like I believe it will fit in the overhead, and then have one of the crew assist me. What ever you do, dont ask permission at the ticket/check-in counter. Airlines differ in their policies and you sould check that out on their web site. Sometimes that comes in handy if it comes down to an argument.(and sometimes it does) My son recently brought me a guitar that he brought on the flight with United. He said they began to give him a hard time, then thinking quickly he pointed to a crack in the old Ovation case and said "look at this! ... this is what happened the LAST time I allowed you guys to handle my guitar!" they instantly motioned for him to go ahead (; I guess those old beatup cases come in handy some times.

Hello Vince,
I would say you are teaching him very well. To think quickly, just like Daddy.

Andrew,

I think the new 9158 case us quite a bit thicker. You may want to check the dimensions of both before you head to the airport. My new case (9158)I picked up is thicker than the case that came with my 1767 and the one that came with my Adamas.

Can't lock it. They have the right to go thru everything. I'd say about 80% of the time I've carried it on the plane. It's not as bad as you think....

If you lock the case, they'll just bust it open.

I have carried on a 9158 lots of times. A few times I have had to gate check it, which is OK since it is hand carried in and out of the hold. Check the equipment on the website before you leave so you know what to expect ... if there is an executive jet on your itinerary, I guarantee ti will need to go into the hold.

I have both checked and carried on my Ovation and others. Over several checked trips the O case is a bit dented and scratched but held up well. Last couple trips I carried on with soft case - check airline website and you will find fine print about what will fit - arrive at the gate early and you should find room. If they can't fit it in the cabin you are at their mercy. But it will be the last item loaded in the hold - maybe!

If it doesn't fit in the overhead, you can ask NICELY if they will put it in the first class coat cupboard. Mine went from Atlanta-LA-Auckland-Brisbane without a hitch. I was also carrying a Traveler guitar.

We've carried Ovations in 9158 cases on a number of flights, including Boeing 737. Just try to be first on the airplane so you can grab space in the overhead before everyone else fills them up. There may be a coat closet that the case will fit into, so ask the flight attendant politely, even if you are going on a regional jet. Finally, it is legal to strap a bag into a passenger seat. It must not block access to an emergency exit and it must not block a passenger from exiting their row. It must be securely seat belted into the seat. There is a good chance if the flight is not full that there will be a way to get it on, even a regional jet.

Once your item is past the initial TSA screening, there is very little chance of it being opened. Firearms must be in a locked bag and only the owner can have the key. The TSA does their inspection and then sends it into the baggage system locked. If you check your guitar at the ticket counter (I WOULD NOT DO THIS), you should leave it unlocked or use a TSA approved lock. But, what I'm slowly getting to is, a gate-checked item has already been through TSA screening with you, and will not be opened unless there is a specific suspicion. Odd fumes, leaking liquids, ticking noises, or anything else suspicious would lead them to force open your case. But if you gate check a guitar in a case, the chances of anyone legitimately wanting to open it are about 0%. I would be willing to lock my Ovation case before gate checking it. A gate checked item will be returned to you in the jetway at your next landing, minimizing handling.

If you don't lock it, putting a belt around it or taping the latches shut to keep it from opening accidentally might be a good idea.
