Anyway, my Son is using his 77 CB beater so there's no real hurry, I plan on getting him something nicer a little down the road.

It just mades you sort of "smile" to think how cheesy it is (a completely plastic guitar) yet sounds amazingly good.

I know there was some discussion about that a while back, but this is the way I believe it to be. If you look at the ebay pics, it looks like the KA-17 board is some kind of light colored wood, stained black. You can see the wear along the bass edges too. The only issue with the aluminum boards is that the frets don't have a nice 'finished' feel; they are rough textured and squared off. Not an issue if you never ever bend a note. The Applause family (including the Academy and Matrix) had a thin chrome plating of some sort on the frets. This wears off, chips off, etc., and generally perpetuates some of the negative stuff about Applauses. I've taken two AA-14s and an AA-24, all three with horrific "fret" wear, and leveled/crowned/polished them. The result is a fingerboard that feels "as good as any". My tan KA-14 had a terribly distorted top. I installed a homemade Bridge Doctor and all is happy now. Not a big BD fan but ya do what ya gotta do....

I would figure that if you stained a wood fingerboard that the stain would sink-in. I didn't realize anybody would really Paint a blond wood for a fingerboard. [I need to quit looking at that... ]
