I'm still looking at buying my first Ovation, and now you guys have got me thinking I need a CT model. I have 2 questions about the 6778 Elite LX I'm looking at in New England Burst, and I know very lttle about these things:

1. It looks like at the very end of the fretboard where it lays on top of the soundboard, you could slip the edge of a piece of paper under the fretboard. Is this a problem?

2. I see the same thing at the very back of the heel, where it looks like you could slip a piece of paper between the bowl and the back edge of the heel. Is this a problem?

Sorry for being so ignorant, and thanks for any input. This thing is on clearance, and I want to make sure it's not because these things may be problems.

If you mean "slip a piece of paper with no effort" it may not be a good thing

but

It has a bolt on neck, so you will see a gap/line where they join. It should be a really close fit.

On the previous run of guitars the fret board was adhered to the top and the heel was set to the body.

If you wonder about a specific unit - take a look at the other LX's.

Quit looking so close! How does it sound and feel? Is it talking to you???

Mine does!

Bigbear,

Several members have that same guitar, including me. I tried slipping in a piece of paper as you described, and I can do it on mine also. I never noticed that it was possible, but I would say that I haven't had any problems of any kind at all. The action is great, and the sound is great. The points brought up by MWoody explain why it's possible, so I wouldn't let it worry you.

I believe that this is a feature of the neck enhancements made in the LX series. By having the neck "float" over the top where the fretboard overlaps the it, and not gluing it to the top, the top is more free to vibrate without the fretboard impeding it = bigger sound and better sustain. My 6778LX NEB is the same and the sweetest thing I have ever played. Go ahead, drive to Spartanburg and take the plunge!

I believe Robbie is correct and that the fretboards are not glued to the top on the LX guitars.

Ovation first went with the "floating" fretboard with the Adamii, then continued it with the Elites. It could be done due to the Kaman bar in the neck which bolted the neck to the body of the guitar. They've taken the whole concept further with the LX series.

Fretboards that "float" over the body of the guitar is not a new idea. As far as I know, tho', Ovation was the first I've heard of that made it work on flat top guitars. It allows the top to vibrate a bit more.

I hadn't heard of there being any kind of space, on the LX's, between the heel of the gutiar and the body. Anybody have any info on that?
