Haven't seen this combination of features before. Export/Japan only, possibly? The Buy It Now of $700 strikes me as a great deal.

Looks like a Sam Ash custom order.

Being a trained detective, I did spot the lack of the name Ovation on it. But I felt my comment,

"I've never seen anything like it", covered that observation.

The headstock logo is way cool. I have never seen another one like it either. Also the guitar has a beautiful spruce top. I did find it strange that it had chrome schaller keys instead of gold. And most important, it is a deep bowl. All in all one very nice guitar. Would CWK2 have any info on any guitars made with that headstock logo?....Paul Hebert

this was part of a special order for Sam Ash. Sammy and I designed it. Forget how many there were, 20-30?

There is another interesting guitar on ebay from the Guitar Center.
If both the Sam Ash and Guitar Center guitar were in excellent condition, you couldn’t play them first and you had to choose one, which one would you choose?

The Koa top is laminate, not solid. Looks good though.

Sam Ash one looks good, except the ugly chrome keys. Where is the brand name on the headstock?

I'd always go with a spruce top, the Koa only looks good, Koa was great for Hawaiin guitars but not for deep throated acoustics. It looks good though.

If you couldn't play them first, go with the spruce. But I seem to remember playing a koa topped Elite in a Guitar Center a few years ago and thought it sounded just fine. Now this disussion makes me want to find one and play it next to my 1537 Elite. Was I listening with my ears or my eyes?

Solid Koa makes great guitar tops, which have a different sound to spruce. Laminated Koa is just pretty plywood and sounds accordingly.

I mentioned in an earlier post where I had met John Dopyro in Escondido, CA; and spent a few hours talking to him and looking at his Dobros. He had a Koa wood Dobro lap steel, acoustic electric, custom built, that sounded acoustically just like a Dobro and electrically like an Hawiian steel. He wanted to sell it to me for $200 and I wanted it bad as I at one time had played lap steel. I had 4 kids and a busted bank account, that was the best deal that ever got away. But I honestly don't know if it was solid Koa or plywood.
