Finally, won a longneck on EBay this morning. Does anybody know what strings they ship from the factory with?

standard 12-52 exp D'Addario. You could use Adamas1818 if you like

If you like to have a setup close to a normal six string Ovation with low action, take mediums. Then you can lower the action without getting a buzz. Lights will do the job as well, but with mediums it works perfect.

I had a DS768 for awhile and I had trouble using lights. There is just too much string floppin around out there on that 28 inch scale. It was hard to get the action down to a respectable level with out buzzes. I now realize (after having sold it) that it would have been much better to use medium gauge strings.

As far as string length goes, every string type I tried was plenty long enough with length to spare, so that was never a problem.

The best thing to do with a longneck guitar is to use huge strings and tune low. Try something like 16 to 70 tuned down to B. That way you have a whole new instrument, rather than just a regular guitar with 2 extra frets.

Yup,

Add a John Pearse Phoshor Bronze .072 6th string to a set of D'add EJ18's, throw away the .014. Drop tune to "B" Have fun!! If you want to play open chords with your friends, kappo up!!!

I have used the .072" setup on a normal guitar (1112) and played in B. Seems like the long neck could go a little more south.

Fred and I have played stonge's proto baritone 12 and it was issued some lights. The end result was a good 12 to amplify and use all that extra neck.

We'll just have to see how I like it set up when one finally gets to me.

Thanks to all. I'll post some pics when it arrives. And thanks to Bobo and The Trawler for letting me have this one.

Paul, I've done that and it does create a whole new instrument.
On the 2080D that I just got I just use the regular lites and they work just fine. I like going to open D and having the strings go up to get there. If somebody wants to go the extra and have mediums, go for it.

Holy crap, Bill.

I just finished working out the details on a 2080D in a matching 6 and 12.

Tell me how much I'm gonna love it!

Stephen,
Mike,
Bill,

You guys have been my GAS Mentors and now that the Baritone market has opened up I think you are all cool! Can I be cool too? I've ordered a wood top in D scale.

This is good Ice Cream!

Mike, it is cool that the only known 2080 12 strings are in Colorado. Plus when we get together and jam a bit, I will just capo up 2 frets :D :D :D

2080 12 string would probably be pretty nice. The long neck 6 is the bomb. Long neck 12 might be too much, too many tones going on in low registers. Gets muddy and confused. There will be a long neck 12 at the New Jersey gathering so let's see what they have to say about it. Oh, and my 2080D will be there too.
