Location: SF Bay area, California | Specifically, I've got a 12 string that keeps unraveling the octave G at the ball end.
It's happened to 8, 9, & 7 gage strings.
The guitar is a modified (fan-fret) Pacemaker. The bass E string scale length is the standard 25.25", and the treble E is 24.6", so all but the bass E's should have lower tension than standard.
What feature of a bridge could cause this? What else?
I'm thinking of getting brass ferrules for wire fishing leaders, or hypodermic tubing , to crimp on the wrapped area the octave G to stabilize it. Any other ideas? I'm in OMA's neighborhood for a few days, so maybe he can direct me to a tackle shop. :-)

Arthur might want you to think he's living in a van, down by the Willamette, busking in the Park Blocks, and eating government cheese- but really he's a Google bot, raking in big bucks for saavy investors. When I click the link it shows me the Tackle Shops in Portland.
So, Mark... You might want to set the location of your computer or smart phone to Portland if you are in Portland.
Also... All of the tackle shops are in the suburbs, cuz nobody really fishes in the Willamette River.
HERE is one a coupla miles north of Alberta.

Location: NW Washington State | I used to work down by the river for UO, I think it was called the Willamette Block building. I'd walk around the Park Blocks at lunch time. Not many people there in those days, and the Pearl District was still just old warehouses. Location: moline,illinois | What brand of strings are you using,maybe try a different brand,I had a 6 string that had problems with the g-string tried another brand and it solved the problem. |

Since I derailed the thread, I'll try to get back on track.
I wonder if strings made for shredding trem-wankers might be less likely to unwind? I was thinking of Fender Bullets with the solid end: http://www2.fender.com/experience/tech-talk/fender-bullets-strings/
I'm not sure if those are available individually. Maybe there's some other plain string with a heavy-duty end.
Anything special about your bridge?

Location: Boise, Idaho | Are they D'Addario's? I've had problems with their G strings on my 6 string guitars. The green ferrules bend and the strings slip off or cut right through the ferrule. |

Location: SW Mintsoda | If you own a soldering iron, try adding a little solder to the wind to stabilize it/"glue" it together. Might work better than super glue. Heat up the string with the iron, then let the solder flow onto it. It shouldn't take much to hold it. |

You could get some cheap single strings to try it. Don't use acid core solder or acid flux. |

My sense of humor works at the speed of Bulletin Boards.
I am living in a small van, and my soldering irons are 600 miles away, in storage.
The good news is that I found D'Addario single 8's - three blocks from me - and bought the 3 that they had. I bought .047" fishing leader ferrules, and some gel style super glue. I glued one ferrule nearest the bead, after some on the windings. Then, a second ferrule - that covers the end of the windings. So far so good!
And today, I think I found the real solution: Ernie Ball "reinforced" RPS strings. $6 for 6. Find the huge graphic and click on it.

So, those Ernie Ball might be good to get for spares.
