I am contemplating an upgrade from my Celebrity 12-string to something that really rocks. (that is AFTER I save up for the tickets to Japan)

I'd like to know what guitars you guys would recommend, i.e., three different preferences listed from 1 to 3. And perhaps your reasons why.

Thanks.

Past sales, IMHO, reflect:

Acoustic or A/E (all based on condition):
$250-$450 Pacemaker (unless you are Nils)**
Balladeer - ??
$450-$750 Legend 12 String or Glen Campbell
$600-$1,000 Custom Legend 1658 (slothead) or 1659
$750-$1,400 6759 Custom Legend
$950-$1,400 Adamas II
$1,800-$3,000 Adamas I, higher if early model

** real nice Pacemaker at Moze Guitars for $395

All depends on the style of music that you play...as you said "rocks", maybe an electric is more your thing.

Whatever Ovation, finest 12-string for the price on the market.

I already have four six-string guitars and two basses, and the Celeb 12-string. I want to replace the Korean model with something a little more professional.

My son is stationed over there in the Air Force, and we are expecting a set of twins to be born in May. The wife has told me WE ARE GOING.
I've done the raw fish-thing over there when I was in the Marine Corps on two separate deployments. I've always said that anything that smells like fish has got to be worth eating :)

I have a custom legend 6-string, and it plays and sounds great. I was looking at the Elite also, but the legend has a AAA Sitka Spruce top, where the Elite has a AA Spruce top (Both solid) I like both, and if I had the cash, it would probably be an Adamas I or II. And there's also the question of whether to choose a deep or shallow bowl 12 string? I play plugged and practice unplugged, and I don't mind standing and playing a deep bowl. But i do like a cutaway better for access to the upper frets. I don't know how much difference there is in sound between the two.
I JUST WISH I HAD A PLACE NEARBY TO PLAY EACH ONE AND TRY THEM OUT before making a decision. I guess that's why I'm sort of relying on input from guys like you, to get some inside scoop on the differences.

I'm not directing this at you personally, more just a general comment, but I would bet you a million dollars you could never tell the difference between AAA and AA. There are some VERY significant differences between Legend and Elite and trust me, the AAA vs. AA is a very miniscule part and as far as I'm concerned insignificant.

Let your ears do the talking (that sounds odd, but you know what I mean). I would love to have a bunch of you sit blind folded and listen to one of my 12-strings and guess what it is. Take off the blindfolds - holy crap, it's a shallow bowl AND it's got a plywood top. How the hell can THAT be?

Believe me, I am a bigot when it comes to deep bowls, solid tops and center sound holes. That's just the way a guitar has to be. But I have been educated to the fact that for every rule, there is an exception. And I own some of them.

My point is, there are some really amazing Ovation 12-strings available. Just don't get too hung up shopping from a spec sheet. It's the sound that matters.

Dave

Thanks Dave, Good info. What are some of the differences you mentioned between the Elite and the Custom Legend? I imagine the reason most of you have endorsed the Deeep Bowl is because most people play a 12 due to the fact that they want that BIG full sound, and the deep bowl must enhance that. The reason I play a twelve sometimes is when I don't have a lot of extra musicians to back me, it fills a lot of sound space.
