Okay, I'm looking on ebay, I see a new 12 string at $699 with case. I my shop has one on order for me for about $860. This FRG tag thing,I trust my shop, are we ever going to know again if a guitar is FRG when all it takes is a tag to be removed? If there's no noticable difference, why would anybody pay extra money? Seems to me Ovation has dropped the ball with the removable tag.

well first you should trust the shop you buy it from. if you don't trust them then you have a problem.
5 year warranty as opposed to lifetime limited warranty.
other than that there is just a tag.

Don't get me wrong,I for sure trust my shop, but in the future,on ebay buys or used buys, how will you know? If I go to sell my guitar, how will I prove it's now FRG? If it doesn't matter, why buy anything else?

the sticker in the guitar is rather difficult to get out and it would leave a tell tale sign of glue.
Ultimately a used guitar is a used guitar it has NO warranty so what is your point?

if anything is to go wrong with a guitar that is the manufacturer's fault it is sure to go wrong in the first year or so.

he's saying he could remove the FRG sticker & sell it on eBay as non-FRG later: save or even make $$.

What he said. The glue can be removed from what I'm reading. They should brand these guitars. In the future you'll never be sure on used Ovations, not that anybody on Ebay is this crooked.

The trick, apparently, is determining what, if anything, was 'reconditioned'. According to Ovation customer service, "We don't keep a log of the defects on each guitar.".
Many times they are customer returns with absolutely nothing wrong other than it wasn't what the customer wanted. When I ordered my Legend from GC they let me take home the one they had, not the color I wanted, until mine came in. I asked what they would do with it when I brought it back, and was told it would be returned to the factory and sold as 'reconditioned'.
As Al said, eventually it's a used guitar. If something doesn't go wrong structurally in the first 5 years, chances are good that it won't. Other than the body, nothing's covered anyway.
I just bought an FRG and I'm confident it will be just fine. Does it lower the resale value? Probably. Do I care? No, because I bought this guitar to play. I can take it anywhere and play it without worrying about damaging a valuable collectable!

So, and I'm asking honestly, why would anybody buy the full warranty guitar? Is it worth the extra money for the warranty? Also, is Ovation going to furnish serial numbers on request to check which ones are returned?

Some will feel it is important to pay for a certified virgin instrument (the GAS factor has more of a kick).
Others feel that as long as it looks and acts like a virgin, the GAS is good.
They both start out functionally and cosmetically identical.
Two years from now they both go up for sale and go to new homes. They are both two year old used guitars without a Factory Warranty.
IMO, Branding a perfectly beautiful guitar is ludicrous… but then we have the eBay-paranoia factor.
Paranoia is just a heightened sense of awareness.

So Ovation has a truck load of FRG guitars, there's no difference between them and full warranty guitars?
I just paid full price for "virgin instument", not feeling very good about that right now.

Kkyle, if the guitar was good for you then, it should be good for you now. Don't worry about the money. Ovations are a bargin at any price. Play them next to Taylors and then feel sorry for the Taylor player who paid over twice what you did.

no that is incorrect an FRG has "something" wrong with it. Usually it is a finish problem or something in the "fit and finish".

There is not a truck load of FRG guitars. As a dealer I get the list and a few days ago was the first time I got a list in MONTHS. and there were only maybe 20 guitars on the list. if that.

Shopping for anything is an adventure. You buy a car off the lot and it has 50 miles on it. Is it new? take the same car back and it is worth 1/3 less. Is it true?

take your guitar play it and enjoy it. If not getting the best price is what is annoying you then take it back and shop around.

alpep-I guess I'm overreacting to the number on Ebay. Also, if there's noticeable problems, I don't feel so bad about buying new. Thanks for the post, I will enjoy. If it's not out of bounds for the forum, where do I find your business?

Kyle, don't get me wrong. If I hadn't had such a bad GAS attack last week, I would have waited until my wife got over the last one (actually that one was a SAS attack, as it involved $2300 worth of assorted audio, keyboard and perc STUFF), then ordered a new one for the extra $300.
For some reason getting over that $1000 mark is such a struggle.

Whaaaaat? It's just a number! Gosh!
