Been talking to some buddies that make their living making race car parts out of carbon fiber...

What type and weight of carbon fiber is used on the Project "O" guitars, on the bowls ???

And on the sound boards ???

On the Adams sound boards ???

It seems the unidirectional "tops" has a slight edge on sound or is it the "chocolate / vanila" flavor thing... again ???

What characteristics do you look for in the resins used for carbon composite guitars

(cw2) ???...

Traditonal epoxy is too soft and will absorb sound... Polyester (fiberglass) resin is "harder, but shrinks too much in the curing process...

I seem to notice a softer sound in a 25 year old Glen Cambell 12 string I just acquired...

Is that in part attributed to the traditional truss rod vs. the Kaman Bar in my new 12 string Balladeer ???

Or is it the combination of 29 years of mellowed top, traditonal truss rod, and old bracing, dried, old, 12 fret board, with raised fret ends, with the deeper bowl and what ever material the bowl was made out of way back then... (it is the about the same color and texture as current, may be a slight brownish tint , but ever so slightly) But the overall weight of the 12 string is consideradbly lighter than my 12 string Balladeer...

vs.

A new Balladeer 12 string 14 fret, with tight everything and new X Bracing ???

Specific comments plz...

Hey AB, We love you just fine. It's just that (for me), you already know a whole lot more about this stuff than I do, so I really have nothing constructive to add. You know me - 12 string guitars are meant to have slotted headstocks and 12 frets clear. Why? I have no idea. Dave

AB;
For the time being, I have the luxury of having a Q at my disposal to scrutinize, but I'm afraid that I'm probably of little help as far as your question(s) go.
I'd venture to say that the top and the bowl are formed from the same material. The thickness (comparing the edge of the open access hatch to the edge of the soundholes) appears to be the same. I don't have my micrometer anymore (friggin' divorce!) t'give you an idea of the thickness).

Keep in mind, that the one I'm watchin' is #010, and the Q has been an ongoing thing (does anyone know what version they're currently up to now?), and there's probably a very good chance that advancements have been made, and current specs may be different.

When it comes to things like grades of carbon fibre and such, I'm afraid that I am a Bear of Very Little Brain. I can only attest that the guitar is VERY light, VERY responsive, and sounds f^&%@$#g awesome!

Sorry that I couldn't be of more help t'ya.

Cliff:

How do you get to borrow the "Super Q" Guitar ???

Per the Adamas / progect "Q" site they claim the sound board is .032 which would be pretty thin... I would think if the bowl were that thin it would be pretty fragile... Responsive but fragile...

The Made in American bowl on my CC026 is .055-.065 measured where the preamp "can" mounts...

Cliff is walking proof of the American Dream, with or without a mullet. Guilt by association! In any good success story its all about who you know!

The texture tops are more expensive/laborius to make than the other innovations. Tops are a sandwich of fibre/wood veneer/fibre followed by poly and then by sweat. The bowls are made of different materials in a variety of methods.

The "Q" is unique and there will not be a Banjo version released any time soon!

Not to mention the wear and tear on the knees of your jeans. I mean, from grooming the horse, ya know?

For Equestrians its the seat that wears before the knees! I haven't ridden since my last traumatic experience on a horse. The dang thing took off before I was ready and wouldn't slow down. Once it sensed my fear I was at its mercy. Saw my life flash before my eyes before the Walmart Manager came out and unplugged it!

Woodman, you need to make sure you're fully in the seat and buckled in BEFORE your wife drops in the quarter.

OK I'll take a shot at the questions;
type and weight, dunno
soundboards, used to be .030 birch center and the grain at a 30* angle, the grafite was unidirectional and was about .010 each layer
I think the unidirectional have an edge over the woven but not sure, I haven't spent enough time with them in A/B tests
what charactistics to look for... strength, flexability and light weight
Softer sound is just a combination of all the aspects of that guitar and the age and playing over that age.

Yeah, but the owner's got a whole BUNCH o'these big ol' shiny (and some not so shiny) metal jobbies from the 20's that get all of the really prime "seating" for the trip.

. . . Ovations just don't get the respect that they deserve . . .

(hmm . . I've heard that before somewhere)
