Location: SoCal | Brad, the middle one, UAE148-5, is the "tenor" uke. When I heard Dave ordered one from Al, also got one. From measurements, tenor is supposed to be 28", baratone 30" in length. My quick measurement is 29", width is more of baritone. Uke can be tuned as tenor or baritone. Still looking for double-bass uke. Last time I was a tenor was when I was 11 years old. ;)
By the way, Al had the best price that I saw...and he always adds some special packing. Black finish looks like the crossweave top on a CMT. |

I have to look into this. Maybe I should be getting the UAE-148-5. I'm thinking it might have a fuller but still uke-ish sound. Any suggestions? (other than to get one of each)

Location: SoCal | I know very little about ukes. Have a ?1920-1930 soprano Koa uke (with strings that are at least 40 yrs old.) From what I have read or seen, ALL ukes suck as an acoustic (compared to an acoustic deep-bowl.) After all, they are small. This uke is pretty good as an acoustic, feels good, easy to play, looks good, etc. It has an OP-24 and is great plugged in. |

Location: Scotland | Tony, it's the scale length, not the overall length which dicates tenor or baritone. A tenor should have a scale length of around 17 inches, 19-20 inches for a Baritone. Concert ukes are usually around 14-15" and sopranos around 13" |

Location: SoCal | Uke is an Applause, compared side by side w/Ovation MM68...
Same size but looks like the MM68 is just a little deeper, more rounded near center of the back.
However, side by side, looks almost identical. Pre-amp on the uke is the sliding vol, on the MM68 is the knob vol. |

scale length from inside of nut to inside of saddle is 17" on this one; basically 13 1/4" on my old Koa one.
guess I will call it a tenor + due to the width and depth. |

figured I would get a response from one of our esteemed "ukies" :p
just meant to say that, due to small size and non-steel strings, there isn't a lot of projection (compared to larger instruments or the steel-string mando.) expected, not disappointed.
it does have that unique uke sound that we are used to. and, can hold its own against any instrument when amplified. if anyone is interested in the soprano or tenor uke, recommend the a/e.
they did a great job - looks good, feels good, easy to play, sounds good. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | The Koa one on the left is a standard model UA-24 but they weren't made for very long and not in large quantity. You may be able to find one used, but to be honest the only one I've ever seen is the one I own. The middle one is a tenor. You can tune a tenor standard (identical to soprano) or low G. I tune mine low G. Ukes sound like ukes (to quote that great philosopher PI). The applause ukes are cute, fun to play, and sound great plugged in. But to be honest, acoustically they can't hold a candle to real quality wood ukes. |

Thanks for the info on the UA24. Had no idea what the model number is/was and already shot an email off to Al (I forsee a 'holiday gift' purchase in the near future )... so, likely he won't be able to help me...er, my wife, out. :) At least I know what to tell her to look for now.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Slip - Body is the same as applause mando body. Very slightly different than USA mando bodies, but you'd never really notice. The center hole ukes sound to me much better. Louder and more clear. If I were you, I would look for a center hole tenor (applause does not make one). Second choice would be UA-10 center hole applause A/E uke. But they are ALL fun. |
