Ok, so we've talked about VIP vs OpPro Studio...

Is the OpPro Studio swappable for the VIP? The form factor appears identical. I'm curious how Ovation plans on handling this: I can see how different owners would want different pre-amps. Making them buy one or the other because of which guitar they buy doesn't seem customer friendly.

Any ideas?

If I'm not mistaken, OP-Pro and OP-Pro-Studio are interchangable. VIP is NOT. Dave

I called Ovation to ask some questions about my new 2006-FKOA, and one of the questions i asked was if the pre-amps where interchangable. He said that the socket would have to be changed, but he seemed to think it could be done.

You could call and find out for sure.

That's interesting...

The reason for my question is that I would like a Custom Legend LX (aka 2079) but am also really intrigued by the VIP.

Any of you guys with the deep contacts know how Ovation intends to handle this? Is the VIP eventually going to be offered on all their products?

The VIP seems to have created something new in the Ovation preamp lineup. Previously, you could always look at the options and say "There: That one is the top of the line". With the VIP, that's no longer true. Some might think the VIP is the top, others might think the OpPro Studio. Its a judgement call.

The last time I inquired about this sort of thing, I was informed the Studio and Pro were interchangable, but the VIP used a different can (which does fit in the Pro space). This isn't unusual, as the OP40-50 had the same profile as the Pro, but needed a different can.
I was also told that the Studio may be available aftermarket later this year, depending on supply, but the VIP will not in the foreseeable future.
I don't think the VIP is destined to become the top of the preamp line 'standard', but it is a very desirable flavor for certain applications. Many players simply prefer a good quality preamp and leave the effects and modeling to the other end of the cord.

Talk about "interchangability"....you should go to the Guitar Centers around here and see the OP20s from Celebs crammed into the housing for an OP-Pro on an LX!!!! I've seen this at least TWICE, now.

One problem is that the VIP has modeled sounds based off the guitar that they are in. If you put a VIP from, say a 2006 KOA, into a Adamas, without changing the programmed modes or models, my guess is that it would not sound right.

Sure, you could physically put a VIP can into any guitar, but you would need to get Ovation to reprogram it.

'tten' is right....but....

If you have ever used a Fishman Aura pedal (I have one) half the fun is trying different modelled 'images' with guitars other than the one intended. Some sound like trash some are really creative. I have used the ADII through the 12 string default on the pedal....spacey :-)

For example in the absence of custom images for my W-587 and ADII I use the ones that were 'recorded' by Fishman and designed for the Elite 1778LX and Legend 1777LX. I match these aginst the elite style guitar and round sound hole guitar models and then I flick between them to find the image that suits whether I am thrashing or picking. They provide pretty good matches. Not as good as custom images of the actual guitar, but then Fishman havent offered up that service yet!

There are now a huge number of modeled instruments with mutiple images for each to play with and they are pretty easy to download.

Not sure that Ovation will be offering a custom packaging for the VIP but the technology is there.

Just my experience :-)

Thats not entirely true (i think). Mine has 2 images from the 2006-FKOA (1 condensor and 1 dynamic mic), and the other 3 are from the 1581 (condensor mic) and 1719 (1 condensor and 1 dynamic mic).

I think if you put mine in a different model and set it for one of the 2006-FKOA settings at 100% image, it would sound very close to my 2006-FKOA through a mic.

But i'm new to Ovations, so i could be entirely wrong...???

The issue of preamps being switched around in music stores was brought up at the factory tour this year.

Has Ovation addressed this yet?

I know there was a discussion about numbering the preamp to the guitar, or something like that.

the two guitars I use the most or a 2080 and a 1777LX...I have three pre-amps, an Op-Pro that came in the 1777LX, the VIP which came in the 2080 and a Studio that came...never mind...

I have had all three in the both guitars, and all three work just fine, no issues. I actually LIKE the Studio in the 2080 better than the VIP for most of my playing. The VIP in the Legend works fine as well...And the Op-Pro does fine in either guitar as well...

Interesting, Greg... At the Q&A they told us the Pro and Studio were interchangable, but the VIP would require a different can.

Well, they didn't say the VIP wouldn't fit, they said it wouldn't work in the Pro can.

So you're saying you've put a VIP into an OP-Pro can, plugged in and all features worked as they should?

Yep, it all works fine. I tried a mix and match last night just to see again, and even did some recording with the VIP in my 1777LX and in my 2080 to see the difference in the mic models, and I couldn't tell any....

So why did my Op-Pro Studio come with a new can (different part number), and specific intructions to swap it out for the Op-Pro?

I have no idea, Fred...I've got a call in about that very thing now. I just pulled all three pre-amps and the three guitars they came in, and looked at the cans and the pre-amps...no difference in the plugs...

Each of the cans have the same input and output plugs, and look identical.

NOW...on some of the FIRST op-pro guitars there was an older can. No idea about what the difference was there, but on the newer models, it all fits and works. So, THAT might have been the issue...
