Location: PDX | I guess it's an operatic piece.
Anyway, i am tortured with American Idol by my wife, but i usually slip away and play my guitar. The thing i hate the most about the show is how they humiliate some of the contestents w/o talent.
So it seems England has an equivalent show.
And that just blew me away.

I loved the visible change in 'attitude' from the judges over the course of the performance - from "I'm bored already" to "WOW"! |

That performance reminded of the Yankee games right after 9/11 when (I forgot his name) sang "God Bless America" during the 7th inning stretch. |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | I have always loved hearing Luciano Pavarotti sing this song during the first Three Tenors concert...but Paul Potts gives him a strong run for the money; what a voice...finals are Sunday night the 17th. |

Location: Poplar Bluff Mo | Nessun Dorma is from Turandot by Puccini. In the story the hero has to guess the name of a princess, if he is wrong he'll be skinned alive! There is a nice DVD of the complete opera "Turandot in the Forbidden City" that was filmed in 1998. Puccini was a great composer. Hey finally a post that I can say something about! |

Here's my SAST review of music genres:
Opera - Death, pain, sorrow and such but done in another language so you have to follow the performers expressions to figure it out. The moral is - Heroes and Royalty are all Bipolar and its much safer to be a quiet, calm peasant... until the plague comes to Town.
Favorite Opera tune - "Kill da Wabbit" from The Ring of the Nebulung(sp).
Bluegrass - Ballads talk about how you asked the girl to marry you, she said no so you drowned her, you didn't cover your tracks and now yer gonna hang, etc. Everything else is just an excuse to get a Banjo solo in...
Favorite BG tune - "Wildwood Flower/Weed". Great banjo solo...
Folk - Stories of brotherhood, sisterhood, unity, sufferage and protest against tyrany and corporate aggression. This was the American version of low budget terrorism, er... resistance. Much more fun than getting actual jobs and paying for Lobbyists like the other guys do. If Lawyers could only sing...
Favorite Folk tunes - Tie between "Slack your Rope Hangman" and "If I had a Hamer".
Rap - (click).
Jazz - Proliferated mostly by Musician's that could actually read music and understand theory and needed something to prove their expertise over those of us that just play.
Favorite Jazz tune - Anything I can butcher like "Take five" or "Windy and Warm".
Country/Rock - Mostly 4/4 with power chords and utilizes common themes like drinking, fighting, running from the law, spending time in prison lamenting your bad decisions and how faithful your dog is. The end goal (for all Male performers)is to communicate to your love interest how sorry you are for screwing up, without actually having to say you are sorry for screwing up, and would she please let you have sex with her again.
The end goal (for all Female performers)is to communicate to your love interest how sorry THEY are for screwing up, without actually making them say they are sorry for screwing up, and that you would have sex with them again if they'd just shut up and listen to you once in a while.
Favorite Country/rock tune - Anything with Reba, Bonnie Raitt or Emmy Lou Harris... I'm willing to listen!
Country Western - Same as above but it allows white guys to two-step and spit.
R&B, Soul - No explaination. You either got it and get it or it ain't happening.
Favorite Soul Music - Springstein, Armitrating or Bonnie Raitt while driving on a long road late at night all alone...
Gospel - God's gift to people with otherwise un-tunable voices or instruments! Even the rocks will praise His name!
Favorite Gospel moments - Hearing the Blind Boys of Alabama CD for the first time, especially the last track - "this may... be the last time...".
Everthing else - just plagarism of the above. |

Location: Stow, Ohio | It's funny, my wife is an American Idol fan. personaly I hate the show. it really proves how America has lowered it standards for talent. the only person on that show that tells it like it is, is Simon. I can't stand the "yo dog" or the ditz.
But then again, I am cynical and hate everything LOL |

You start-out with 20 people, you make them act stupid for 13 or 26 shows... They are cheap to produce, no writers, really no sets. The type of person who will audition for this crap is already dysfunctional...
And you only have to PAY ONE OF THEM!
Bars have been doing this for years, with The Battle of the Bands.
Hey, I know alot of people just want the opportunity to Play, and they might get free beer.
But the Networks make Millions, maybe Billions!
Please understand, I've played 'Roadie' with alot of bands that only made enough money for strings and a U-Haul, maybe a Motel room.
(Back when Motel 6 really was 6 Bucks!)
But we DID get free beer.
Edit-- But that dude is still good! And even if he doesn't win, I think that he's Happy. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Actually it started because the actors union went on strike. The spoiled brats wanted more. But who got the last laugh when the networks said drop dead, we'll make shows withOUT actors, we'll use real people. Survivor was the first in this country. I think Big Brother might have started earlier over in the UK.
